Government Opens "Air Bridge" To Bypass Protesting Indians

Protests & DemonstrationsAircraft from the Compañía Aérea de Aviación (COPA), Aeroperlas and Air Panamá began an airlift yesterday between Panama City and David as part of joint efforts to move thousands of people who are stranded between the two provincial capitals. This measure is the result of the closure of the Pan American Highway by the region's Ngäbe-Bugle people, and terrestrial communication has been interrupted in the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Chiriqui with the rest of the country. This air bridge is being done through the Tocumen and Albrook airports, in connection to the airport in David, and the flights will be free (no cost to passengers). At the Enrique Maleck airport in David security and surveillance has been stepped-up to ensure the effective development of the movement of people.

EVACUATION - In addition to this air bridge, the National Air Service (SENAN) and the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) initiated the evacuation process in the areas of San Felix and Vigui to transport tourists, children, elderly, sick and other bus passengers.

INCREASE FLIGHTS - In the early hours of yesterday, it was learned the domestic airlines at the Marcos A. Gelabert airport have doubled flights. Rolando Pereira, Aeroperlas commercial manager, said yesterday Aeroperlas increased by three times their commercial flights between Panama City and Chiriqui.

FOOD - Similarly, vegetables and milk will be transported from Chiriqui to Panama by barges and air freight, to provide the community, hotels, restaurants and hospitals, and gasoline is being imported from Costa Rica to supply the province of Chiriqui.

'KIDNAPPED' - Faced with the worrisome situation, the National Civil Protection reported yesterday afternoon, the Indians had 'kidnapped' a passenger bus from the Tica Bus company with about 42 Costa Rican tourists. (Siglo)
