Panama Has Request A Safe Conduct Pass for Ecuadoran Journalist
The Panamanian government yesterday began the procedures to request safe conduct from Ecuador for the Director of the Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo, Carlos Perez, to enable him to travel to Panama, where he received diplomatic asylum on Thursday, said Foreign Minister Roberto Henriquez. "We are beginning the process of applying for the pass for Carlos Perez Barriga who remains in exile in Panama Embassy in Quito," said the chancellor. "That process has been started, but it will depend on the Ecuadorian government to issue the safe conduct pass, which we hope they will do," he added. "Panama is still a sanctuary for asylum, and is still paying no attention to political factions or ideologies or party colors," said the chancellor.
Ecuador will process the safe conduct pass for the editor of the newspaper El Universo, Carlos Perez, when Panama - which has granted him asylum and where he has sought refuge in Panama's embassy in Quito - requests it, although the government of Ecuador has said Perez can leave the country because the conviction against him has not yet been issued, in a case for insulting the president Rafael Correa.
