Contributed by: Don WinnerTwo consortiums and one company prequalified to participate in the bidding for the construction of a new bridge over the Panama Canal on the Caribbean end. Acciona Infraestructuras -Tradeco (Spain and Mexico), Odebrecht – Hyundai Joint Venture (Brazil and Korea), and Vinci Construction Grands Projets (France) are the three prequalified bidders that will now go to the second stage, which will select the contractor to actually build the new bridge. This second phase begins with the delivery by the Panama Canal Authority of a statement of objections with the design and specifications, a site visit for those who have prequalified, and the receipt of proposals, in August 2012. Editor's Comment: Part of the grand strategy for the future development of Panama includes the construction of a new highway along the entire Atlantic coast that would link Bocas del Toro with the province of Colon, in order to open this area up to development. Right now the road along the "lower coast" of the province of Colon ends at Miguel de la Borda. Building this highway would open all kinds of brand new beachfront property up for future development. Right now it's practically worthless, because you can't drive there, there are no services, etc.
