Twelve years ago, Cynthia Mulder and family travelled by Ferry to Taboga Island to explore a location for their planned B&B Hotel Cerrito Tropical. They fell in love. The ferry ride is exciting for the first time, with views of the Panama Canal, and the panorama of Panama City. The Taboga Ferry takes you to Taboga as if in a time machine. The Taboga village is quiet, historic, fishing community, with some nice tropical hikes, good fishing and boating. Taboga Island is often compared by visitors to a tiny village on the Mediterranean.
Cool Location: B&B Cerrito Tropical is located on the edge of a magnificent forested green hill and is hosted by Cynthia Mulder and her team of local employees and cooks (including chef Aristides). Cerrito is at the edge of the village beside the rainforest which offers a nice combination of both land-based activities, nature and sea excursions, not to mention the delicious sea breezes which waft up from the ocean. This Taboga Island hotel, B&B Cerrito Tropical, is set back from the weekend discos and crowds that sometimes arrive on the island. With its tropical garden and ranchito, cool jungle backdrop and menu with mouthwatering local fish and international dishes, comfortable, clean, casual rooms and atmosphere, Cynthia Mulder does her best to ensure that guests enjoy a relaxing stay. If there are any questions or needs, Cynthia and her team are happy to address them.
Cerrito Tropical Activities: There is plenty to do when you know where to look. Some activities can be organized by B&B Cerrito Tropical with advance notice:
Here is the Secret: At first glance, there isn’t much on Taboga Island. Not many vehicles, mostly walking paths, no wide streets, no malls, no casinos, no noise or pollution, a few tourists and weekenders, mainly families in a small community making their living from the sea. There lies the secret beauty. Taboga has a simple rural feel even though you can see bustling Panama City from the B&B Cerrito Tropical ocean view balconies.
Cynthia Mulder has a passion for Taboga Island and has been working hands-on to develop their rural retreat to give international tourists a local cultural experience in a safe and comfortable environment and city dwellers a weekend get-away.
Guest Rooms, Vacation Apartments & Services: With three levels of comfortable, clean rooms, Cynthia and Hiddo Mulder have developed a varied following of guests at their Bed & Breakfast Hotel Cerrito Tropical on Isla Taboga. From the basic Mango rooms, to the La Palma Apartment with its magnificent ocean view, with varied rates and styles there is something for everyone. Seasonal Rates range from $65 to $110 per couple depending on season and day, government taxes apply. Guests with Panama pension status cards receive discounts off the Rack Rates by notifying Cerrito Tropical when making the reservations and on food (please notify wait staff before they make the bill).

More information: Sustainable local Taboga Island B&B Hotel: The Mulders have been involved over their years on Taboga Island with community development, and assisting the community through its health center, church, school, training, youth sports teams, municipality, and local projects. Through their commitment to the village they have developed B&B Cerrito Tropical to be a sustainable operation by hiring and training local people, supporting local boat owners and tour guides, using local produce when possible, buying Tabogan fresh fish, growing fresh organic fruit and herbs onsite for guests to eat and also for educational purposes. They welcome guests who visit to assist the village community and do their best to help make the necessary connections required for charitable groups and organizations. Feel free to contact them about your project.
Taboga Island is a quaint, old fashioned fishing village just minutes by ferry from Panama City, and a direct flight from many major US, Canadian, South American, and European cities. It is a lovely place to stop, and smell the flowers it is so famous for, enjoy the beach, to fish from the pier, and to swim when the tide is in. Life is relaxed and on island time.
Ferries: Approximately 12 miles from Panama City just 25 to 50 minutes by ferry. The 2 Ferry companies have regular sailings to Taboga Island. Arrive 1 hour before departure time to ensure a seat. On Holidays & during Vacation Periods it may be busier so arrive earlier or purchase your tickets in advance.
Location: of Taboga Island, Republic of Panama: Longitude 8° 47′ Latitude 79° 33′
NO BANK MACHINES! ATMs on Isla Taboga, there are NONE, please bring cash or credit card (Cerrito Tropical accepts cash plus Visa and Mastercard as long as the local phone lines are working! – most places on Taboga do not accept credit cards)
About Beaches: The beaches are cleaned on a regular basis by the men who rent umbrellas and chairs, but sometimes there is debris which washes in from the ocean; the beach by the (no longer existing) Hotel Taboga property is safe for kids, as well as the beach Playa Honda - many of the other Pacific Beaches up the mainland Panama coast can have strong riptides; this makes Taboga Island great for those who love swimming in the ocean but don’t want to make the long drive up the coast. Caution must be exercised when the tide is coming in high over the sandbar by Isla Morro when a strong current develops for a short time.
At present there are no public facilities on the beaches therefore many guests to Taboga, even Day visitors, choose B&B Cerrito Tropical as their base through a Day Package in order to have clean restrooms and take advantage of the garden shower and delicious food in the clean and organized restaurant.
Safety: On Taboga Island, kids can play on the streets, and wander around without fear. Their biggest fear will be how to survive without a game center or cable TV, and how to treat a toe cut at the beach. At night guests walk the streets with no worries along the newly constructed Taboga boardwalk along the beach. There is a Maritime Police station by the pier who are happy to assist.
