Princess Cruise Line Sued For The Second Time Over Deaths of Panamanian Fishermen

Panama News The family of a Panamanian fisherman, who died at sea after their boat broke down, sued today, Monday, 4 June 2012, the company that owns the Star Princess cruise ship, because they feel they violated international maritime law by failing to attend a call for help. This is the second lawsuit in recent weeks filed against Princess Cruise Lines, accusing them of not helping three Panamanian fishermen in March, 15 days after their small boat broke down on the Pacific Ocean. The parents of sixteen year old Fernando Osorio Rodriguez is seeking compensation of more than $1 million dollars in the lawsuit filed in federal court in Miami.

The document bears the names of Fernando Osorio and Denia Ivette Rodriguez, the parents of the young fisherman who died. According to the document, Osorio and his friends Oropeces Betancourt and Adrian Vasquez rented a small boat to fish off the coast of Panama in the Pacific Ocean, and shortly after leaving the engine broke and they were stranded on the ocean. Osorio's family alleged in the complaint that three passengers on the cruise ship saw the broken down boat and alerted a crew member. The company, however, said the captain was never notified.

Two of the three young men died after being stranded at sea for a total of 28 days. The third, eighteen year old Adrian Vasquez, survived after being rescued on March 22 in waters around the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, about 960 kilometers from where the boat broke down. He also sued Princess Cruises. (Prensa)

Editor's Comment: This is the second lawsuit filed. I suspect there will be one more coming, from the family members of Oropeces Betancourt, the other person who died on the 26 foot long fiberglass fishing panga, the "Fifty Cent." Panama Guide readers knew about this story before anyone else, because I broke it, after everyone else Judy contacted ignored her.

How about they sue the onwer of the boat that they rented? How about they make it where you can't just go out on the ocean without proper supplies in case this happens again?
