Surgery for Yankees' Rivera 'went perfectly'

Sports SectionMariano Rivera's surgery to repair a torn right ACL "went as planned" on Tuesday. In a statement released by the PR department, the surgery was done by Dr. David Altchek and assisted by team doctor Chris Ahmad. It was an "isolated replacement of ACL with no work on the meniscus." The Yankees closer suffered the injury shagging fly balls in Kansas City before a game against the Royals on May 3. The surgery was delayed until Tuesday because of a blood clot in his leg. "My surgery was a success, it went perfectly," Rivera said on Twitter. "I am looking forward to beginning my rehab soon. Thanks as always for your prayers." It is unlikely that Rivera will return this season, though the Yankees have not confirmed that yet. (
