New Prison For Adolescent Offenders Opens - Capacity For 194

Crime & PunishmentThis weekend, the authorities begin to transfer the youthful offenders from the Arco Iris Custody Enforcement Center to the new facility in Pacora, said Interior Minister Jorge Ricardo Fabrega. Minister Fabrega said problems with construction have delayed the transfer of all inmates. He said the mass escapes that have occurred in recent days are a result of overcrowding of prisons. Of the 24 adolescents who escaped on Monday, only one remains at large. The new prison in Pacora was built at a cost of approximately $12 million dollars, and it has a capacity to accommodate 194 inmates. It covers an area of 16.298 meters square with 17 buildings, 4 multipurpose playing fields, as well as a machine shop, welding, carpentry and joinery. The new facilities were built after the fire that killed five of the seven inmates injured after a fire was sparked during a riot in the Tocumen Compliance Center on 9 January 2011. The Minister of Government at that time, Roxana Mendez, said there were 315 adolescents detained in six prisons, with a capacity for 272. (TVN)
