Cano: "The IDAAN Will Not Be Privatized"

Infrastructure UpgradesThe director of the Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (IDAAN), Abdiel Cano said Friday June 15th that with the creation of the Water Authority will not privatize this institution. Cano said it would ensure the stability of the workers, because they are only proposing a change of management. The IDAAN director said workers who are dismissed will receive compensation not less than that required in the Labor Code for private sector employees. There needs to be a change of mentality, because the IDAAN will be run as a corporation, ie the entity will operate with the same rules of private enterprise, stressed the official. According to the Minister for Canal Affairs Romulo Roux, the Water Authority which is in a draft bill, will have a similar structure to that of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), because the Board will be composed of eleven members, including a Minister of State and a representative of the Legislature. Editor's Comment: This week IDAAN workers have been protesting and handing out leaflets, because they fear the unknown of what might happen once the new Water Authority is created to replace the current IDAAN. The law is required to change some of the legal frameworks holding back efforts to modernize management of the water system in Panama.
