Panama Is One Of The Most Peaceful Nations in Latin America - And More At Peace Than The US, Mexico, and Colombia

Panama NewsBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - The Vision of Humanity released their 2012 Global Peace Index On 12 June 2012. This is the sixth edition of the report, which has been prepared since 2007. The Global Peace Index (GPI) is an attempt to measure the relative position of nations' and regions' peacefulness. It is the product of Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) and developed in consultation with an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes and think tanks with data collected and collated by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The list was launched first in May 2007, then continued on May 2008, 2 June 2009, 10 June 2010, 25 May 2011, and most recently on 12 June 2012. It is claimed to be the first study to rank countries around the world according to their peacefulness. It now ranks 158 countries (up from 121 in 2007). For more information on scientific data, methodology, and indicators used in compiling the assessment, see the Global Peace Index page on Wikipedia. The report indicates Panama is one of the most peaceful nations in both Central America and Latin America, and is much more peaceful compared to the United States, Mexico, and Colombia. (more)

Panama: The Second Most Peaceful Country in Central America: On the GPI a low score is better and the "more peaceful" nations have a score closer to 1, and a higher score are those nations that are "less peaceful" and a score closer to 5. In Central America only Costa Rica is more peaceful than Panama according to the GPI data. In 2012 Panama obtained a score of 1.899 and was ranked 61st out of 158 countries. Among the other nations of Central America, Panama was second behind Costa Rica (with a score of 1.659) and ahead of Nicaragua (2.006), El Salvador (2.220), Guatemala (2.287), and Honduras (2.339).

Fifth Most Peaceful in Latin America: In comparing Panama to the entire region of the Americas, only four nations are "more peaceful" - Chile (1.616), Uruguay (1.628), Costa Rica (1.659), and Argentina (1.763). Canada is more peaceful than Panama with a score of 1.317, while the United States is less peaceful and scored 2.058. By comparison Mexico is one of the least peaceful (or most violent) nations in the world, scoring 2.445 and Colombia was near the bottom of the list, ranked 144th out of 158 and scoring 2.625 overall.

Making Political Hay: I picked up in this report because this morning there was a report in the La Prensa newspaper in Spanish. This newspaper completely backs the position of the Panameñista political party, and they are effectively at war with the ruling Cambio Democratico political party and the president Ricardo Martinelli. Their take on this report was somewhat different. They highlighted the constant political infighting among the political parties in Panama as a reason why they think Panama is less peaceful, but ironically the lack of peace on that front is being caused for the most party by the opposition political parties such as the PRD and the Panameñistas, and the various news media outlets and biased journalists who support one position or the other. So, it's sort of like setting your own house on fire and then complaining about the heat.

Professionally Done, Scientific Data, Solid Analysis: This GPI is very well done and is based on scientific data and sound research. This report basically confirms what most of us already knew at some level - Panama is a relatively safe and peaceful place compared to most of her neighbors. Of course there is crime and violence, but for the most part Panama enjoys a sound and stable democratically elected government (despite the relentless political infighting among the various parties). Because of the key and strategic geographical position enjoyed by the country which has brought riches in the form of the Panama Canal, the government of Panama has to wage a constant war against drug traffickers and all of the associated crimes such as money laundering, weapons trafficking, human trafficking, and government corruption. All on the nations in our neighborhood are fighting the same fight, and Panama is still much better off than Mexico, Honduras, Colombia, Guatemala, or Nicaragua. Another way to see this report is that most of the drug related crime and violence that makes Panama a "less peaceful" country never touches the members of our English speaking community of expatriates in Panama, so as a microcosm, we are somewhat isolated and insulated from much of the violence plaguing some of the poorer neighborhoods and districts of the country.
