"Guns and Ammunition For Food And Medicine" Event In Panama Next Friday
By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - On Friday, 6 July 2012, the office of the Governor of the Province of Panama will once again hold their "Guns and Ammunition for Food and Medicine" program. Officials will have positions set up in the parking lot of the Machetazo store in the area of 24 de Diciembre, from 8:00 am until 3:00 pm. This program is designed to get illegal firearms off of the streets of Panama. Participants can turn in any kind of weapon or ammunition - no questions asked - in return for vouchers which can be used for food or medicine.
These kinds of programs have been used with varying degrees of success, starting just after the US Just Cause invasion of Panama in the end of 1989. At that time, the military dictatorship of Manuel Antonio Noriega had obtained shiploads of automatic weapons and ammunition - mostly AK-47's - and handed them out to the poorest neighborhoods of Panama with orders to use them against the American soldiers.
Very often it's family members who turn in the illegal weapons - because they know "junior" has a gun stashed under his bed and they want it to go away. The image below shows the results from a similar recent event.
