45 New Garbage Trucks Delivered

Infrastructure UpgradesPresident Ricardo Martinelli today received the delivery of 45 new garbage collection trucks that will be used by the National Cleanliness Authority in a ceremony held on the Coastal Strip. Martinelli refused to discuss other topics after the ceremony. In addition, he simply read a prepared speech in which he emphasized that with the purchase of this new equipment they will be better able to achieve an improved standard of health and quality of life, and not need to rent them.

The director of the Cleanliness Authority, Enriquez Ho, said these new trucks will go to the areas of San Francisco, Obarrios, Bethania, Santa Ana, Calidonia, and Chorrillo. Ho also said programming is being done with the equipment in the rental agreements to give more support to garbage collection. He said 90% of complaints they receive from the public are from people who are receiving garbage that is not being generated in their community. (Estrella)

Editor's Comment: Garbage collection in many parts of Panama City has been so bad historically that residents have taken matters into their own hands. It makes no sense to allow garbage to pile up in front of your own house if you know that on one will ever come around to pick it up. So, they bag it up, take it with them in the car, and then toss it someplace by the side of the road. That's what Ho was talking about when he said complaints are coming from garbage being generated by other communities. Anyway, 45 new garbage trucks, many more millions of dollars, fixing yet another problem that has plagued (literally) Panama City for generations.

The solution for this problem is so obvious, it is ridiculous. Simply require everyone who desires garbage pickup to have a certain type of garbage can put at the side of the road. In the US, trucks are designed with hydraulic arms that reach out, grasp the can, lift and dump into the truck. For those with limited means, there should be public dumpsters staggered along blocks which would require walking to and dumping. manually.

The lake of imagination and adopting of long proven sanitary, economical, and efficient solution is stupefyingly numb in its lassitude.

These brand new beautiful trucks need to be maintained scrupulously. To that end, the smart thing would be for the controlling authority to privately contract a company to carry out all maintenance, "by the book", not some baseless ideas of under qualified shade tree mechanics. Otherwise, they will be blowing out blue smoke way before their expected life span.
