PRD Members Waiting For Results Of Yesterday's Election

PoliticsThe Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) held an election yesterday, Sunday, 8 July 2012, to choose the delegates who will attend a national convention on 26 August 2012. The election was held in an atmosphere of unity, and the process was conducted with order. The official results of the election will be announced on Friday, but the unofficial results are expected to be leaked today. (Telemetro)

Editor's Comment: For the most part the election went off without a hitch. There were a couple of places (in La Chorrera and Tocumen) where there were errors printed on the ballots, so the elections in those districts had to be suspended, and they will be repeated with new and correct ballots, probably on Sunday. This election was to select the 4,200 delegates who will attend the PRD's national convention on 26 August 2012 - where they will vote to elect the new National Executive Committee (CEN) of the PRD political party. There are about 485,000 people who are card carrying members of the PRD. At the time of the 2009 national election there were 2,211,261 registered voters in Panama, so in those terms about 22% of all Panamanian voters are registered members of the PRD.
