Three TVN Journalists In Court For Defamation Charges

Law & LawyersAmid concerns about freedom of speech and freedom of the press, a trail began this morning in the Seventeenth Court against three journalists from the channel 2 TVN television station, Siria Miranda, Eduardo Lim Yueng y Kelyneth Pérez, charged for allegedly committing the crime of slander and libel. The judge presiding over the hearing is José Félix Sánchez. The dissemination of a video denouncing the alleged payment of a bribe for a traffic violation was the cause of this lawsuit for alleged defamation. The journalists felt that they acted properly and objectivity in reporting the case. (TVN)

Editor's Comment: The trial started at 8:30 am this morning. They caught a driver paying a bribe to a corrupt traffic cop in order to get out of a ticket on video, and showed the video as part of the report. I simply cannot understand how this was somehow twisted back around into an attack on the journalists. I have always thought this case would be thrown out once it got to court. How can it be defamation if you're reporting the truth of what happened. Who filed the complaint? What prosecutor took the case to trial? Let's see what happens. If these guys are convicted there will be serious international repercussions and damage to Panama's image within the global community. It the case is tossed out, then it's just another minor blip.

I don't care how hot the economy is, Panama will never be viewed by the community of free nations as anything more than a third rate banana republic until this kind of crap is stopped once and for all.
