Connecting The Americas Summit Starts in Panama This Week

Internet & TechnologyFrom 17 to July 19 Panama will host the Connecting the Americas Summit, to be held at the Atlapa Convention Center, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Public Services Authority (ASEP). Ernesto Mendez Chiari, Deputy Director General of International Conferences of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is a very ambitious meeting which seeks to connect those who are not connected by 2015, across the continent.

He said in recent years Panama has proven itself to the be "home" of not only in logistics, shipping, and aviation, but also as one of the counties most open to change. "This drew the attention of the United Nations and that's why we were chosen to be the host this year," he told RPC Radio.

The event will involve heads of state and ministers of the region, who will address issues such as changing public policy in their countries to improve telecommunications and internal and external communications. The event offers leaders of public and private sectors, and those of international organizations of regional development and funding, the possibility of establishing direct contacts, and to and forge new partnerships to accelerate the adoption of broadband connectivity.

The formal opening is scheduled for 18 July, by the President of Panama, Ricardo Martinelli, who will be accompanied by his counterpart from Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, among other authorities. (Panama America)
