Editor's Comment: I've known Carmen since she was a kid in high school, where she attended with my niece. Her case demonstrates the fact that Panama needs some sort of medical evacuation capability. I think it's great that president Ricardo Martinelli offered the use of his presidential airplane to fly her up to PA for medical treatment, but I see cases and situations all the time where people (patients) need to travel back to the US or Canada for medical treatment. Medical evacuation flights are very expensive - mostly because they have to be chartered for a specific purpose. There is no "domestic" capability in Panama. I don't have all the answers, but hopefully this is something the government might take on.
