Irving Saladino Wins Gold In Monaco - Last Warm Up Before Olympics
By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Irving Saladino, the Panamanian who is the reigning Olympic long jump champion, won the Diamond League competition in Monaco today, Friday, 20 July 2012. This is the last major competition before the start of the Olympic Games in London, which will be inaugurated next Friday, 27 June 2012. Saladino's best and winning jump of this competition was 8.16 meters. Second place went to Australian long jumper Mitchell Watt with a jump of 8.12 meters. While Chris Tomilson from Great Britain was third with a leap of 8.01 meters.
Editor's Comment: Saladino jumped 8.34 m to win the Gold Medal in 2008. It's great to see he won this last warm-up competition in Monaco. As the defending Gold Medal winner, Saladino is clearly the guy everyone else is going to have to beat in London. I have high hopes for him. I think the victory is already "in his head" if you know what I mean. The difference between these guys comes down to that extra little bit - who wants to fly further - more mental than physical. It seems like Saladino might be ready to peak at the right time. I mean, no pressure - he's already won the first Olympic Gold Medal in history for Panama. Now he can just go uncork and have fun, jump with a smile on his face. We'll all be watching.
