Two Year Old Child Dies With H1N1 Flu Virus in Panama

HealthcareNine cases of H1N1 flu detected were reported this weekend at the Hospital of Pediatrics, and of those one two year old child died. According to a statement released by the Social Security Fund (CSS), two cases have been confirmed and seven are under study. The child who died was one of the two confirmed H1N1 cases. According to spokesmen for the CSS, the child who died was admitted with a severe respiratory infection, but the Medical Examiner must determine whether the death was due to the existence of the virus or the complication presented. Social Security health officials recommend people to use preventive measures such as avoiding contact with the sick, or those who have a fever and cough, wash your hands frequently, cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing with a disposable tissue, wear masks and avoid kisses and greeting people with flu symptoms. Editor's Comment: We are now in the middle of the rainy season in Panama, and this is the height of our cold and flu season. This same H1N1 virus was responsible for a pandemic in 2009 that killed tens of thousands of people worldwide. So, if you or anyone else in your family presents flu symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Waiting until it gets really bad might be a fatal mistake.
