No Funds For New Hospitals Until 2014
The Minister of Economy and Finance, Frank de Lima, said the priority for the construction of new hospitals in Panama is the Cancer Hospital, and he said at the moment there are no funds for the Children's Hospital or the Santo Tomas hospital. De Lima said he has maintained a permanent consultation with the Minister of Health, Franklin Vergara, and to date it has been determined they do not have the funds to build new hospitals. He said the Children's and Santo Tomas hospitals might be included in the budgets for 2014 or 2015. He also said he has met with representatives of IDB to find financing to build them. He added on Radio Panama that soon there will be a public event to attain the land for the Children's hospital. Today medical authorities at the Children's Hospital have reiterated they have already outgrown the current facilities based on demand, so they need to build a new hospital.
