Torrijos Calls For A Separation of Powers In Panama

CorruptionToday marks 31 years since the death of General Omar Torrijos Herrera so members of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) performed a ceremony at the mausoleum erected in his honor on the Amador Causeway. The former President of the Republic, Martin Torrijos Espino called for respect for due process in the investigations against him, for the paying or bribes to approve the Multimodal Services Center (CEMIS) project in 2001, where he is mentioned. "The Assembly and the Court closed the case and from that year until the government of Ricardo Martinelli came to power, my name came up," he told local media. He said in Panama there must be a separation of powers, just as there should be a free press, so they can fully exercise their right to inform the society.

Torrijos said the CEMIS case where his name is mentioned, is a clear example of the politicization of justice where the study will be a legal embarrassment for those who practice law in the country. Torrijos declined to give details of his sudden resignation from the Central American Parliament, and said in due time he will give statements. "Today is not the time or day, we commemorate the 31 anniversary of the death of Omar Torrijos," he said. After the ceremony at the Causeway there was a mass at 8:00 am at the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. (Panama America)
