Irving Saladino - Eliminated

Sports SectionBy DON WINNER for - The Panamanian long jumper Irving Saladino failed to qualify today at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He fouled on all three of this attempts, and did not put up a single qualifying jump. Saladino won Panama's first ever gold medal at the 2008 games in Beijing. Oh well, so much for a repeat. Thus far none of Panama's athletes have won a medal of any color.

It is gone the last chance we had to get a medal. At least, Colombia got 3.

Panama doesn't contribute enough money into its athletic programs to support athletes to prepare for the olympics. The perfect example is the Panamanian boxer who lost...the first thing out of his mouth was for Martinelli to give him a house. If Panama puts a greater emphasis in supporting its athletes like they have done in the last 10 years with soccer, our fortunes will turn around quickly. I will say this too...if we could get the youth in Colon (where Saladino is from) to stop killing each other and train them, we could compete with the likes of Jamaica and USA in track and field in the next 4 years.
