Foreign Prisoners Might Be Sent To Their Home Countries

Crime & PunishmentThe director of Panama's prison system Angel Calderon confirmed on Saturday they are analyzing the possibility of signing agreements with several countries in Europe and the Americas to repatriate foreign detainees, in an effort to ease prison overcrowding. According to Calderon, foreign prisoners, especially those involved in drug trafficking cases, could be benefited by this process of repatriation, because they are being held in maximum security wards, which are the most overcrowded. These halls can accommodate 300 inmates, but currently there are up to 500 detainees.

Among the countries mentioned, Calderon said they are already working with countries like Colombia, Mexico and Spain. He said the agreements were achieved thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

For his part, Government Minister, Jorge Ricardo Fabrega said they are making investments to build new prisons in the interior of the country. (TVN)
