Businessman David Ochy Avoids Interview With La Prensa

Panama NewsOn Friday August 3, at 4:24 pm, the banana landowner David Ochy committed to do an interview with La Prensa, which eventually fell through. The meeting, according Ochy, was to clarify each of the publications of this newspaper (La Prensa) about his plans to export bananas - harvested on lands that are in the process of being titled by the State - and his lucrative contracts to build roads. The businessman agreed to meet with a team of journalists and photographers for Saturday afternoon. The group went to David at 5:30 pm. At 6:00 pm he called to say they should wait for him. After two unsuccessful attempts, Ochy returned the call at approximately 7:00 pm. Then he said it was too late to conduct the interview. When the journalists insisted on conducting the interview anyway, Ochy hung up.

The businessman's initial intention was to make the journalists go to his farm in Divalá, to have as witnesses the banana workers who defend his banana exportation project. (Prensa)

Editor's Comment: OK, so which is it? This guy bitches and complains about what La Prensa is printing about him. So, they give him the opportunity to present his side of the story. Then, he stands them up, and hangs up on them. Obviously, this David Ochy guy wants to have his banana and eat it too. I don't know who is giving him advice on how to manage the media in a crisis, but they are really, really mishandling this situation, to the point of being comical. He's pissed off, and by stomping around like a spoiled six year old he's making himself look like - well - a spoiled six year old. College text books are filled with examples like this, of "how not" to deal with the press in a business media crisis. Ochy and company are apparently going down the list and doing all of the stuff you're not supposed to do. Check, check, check, check... Sooner or later they'll get tired of the pain, and stop hitting themselves in the head. In the meantime it's mildly entertaining.

Don’t play that hand Mr. Ochi. You have absolutely nothing to gain there. They’ve made up their particular justice system where they have reversed the burden of proof. You wil be guilty even if you are innocent. There will be no jury or impartial judge, no procedural rules or anything of that sort. The Director of La Prensa, who is decisively biased against you, will be the only judge and he will decide everything, after consulting with B. Eisenmann. They will never publish anything that favors you because there are no effective replica rules in this country. They will never accuse you with the the Ministerio Publico because there they will be required to present evidence and they have nothing but speculations, theories, and conjectures. Nothing that can possibly be considered evidence in a court of law. Its all politics.
