President Avoids Talking About Sinking Yacht

Boats and Sailing President Ricardo Martinelli today avoided referring to the sinking of one of his yachts, stating this is something personal. The wreck occurred Saturday in Bay Piña, Darien, when it was headed to that province for a fishing event. As reported by the SENAFRONT, the three crew and one of the bodyguards of president Martinelli's son were rescued unharmed. The president's son was scheduled to fly by helicopter. On the channel 2 TVN morning news broadcast, the Minister of the Presidency, Roberto Henriquez, said the yacht was purchased by President Martinelli with his own resources before he became the President of the Republic, so he asked for respect and discretion. He said the boat hit rocks and sank. Although on Saturday, according to the SENAFRONT, the crew had reported mechanical damage. (TVN)

Editor's Comment: There are two pieces of conflicting information in this report. I was told Martinelli had just recently purchased the yacht that sank, so the report by Henriquez that he had bought it before he became president is simply different from what I was told by another source. Also, the "hit rocks and sank" version is different from what Martinelli told me himself. Martinelli was clear that the boat did not hit rocks - although this was what La Prensa reported. In my opinion they should just say "we don't know yet, we're still investigating" and leave it at that, until they know what actually happened. I'm not taking the PRD submarine off of the table just yet...
