Contributed by: Don WinnerBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - People write to me directly all the time, asking for advice about moving to Panama, living here, or investing. I usually give them the same advice. It makes much more sense to ask the members of the Americans in Panama Yahoo email group the same question.
As of today, this group has 5,755 members, most of whom live in the Republic of Panama. You'll find everything from grizzled veterans to fuzzy toed newbies. Once you join the group, you can just send one email message to the group address - email@example.com - and the message is distributed to all of the group's members. So it's a sort of like and automated email broadcast service. Then whoever answers the question also posts to the group address. It's a fantastic way to quickly and easily get an answer to even the most archaic question.
One word of warning - new members are expected to have done at least some basic research on their own, by searching through the group's archives or doing a simple Google search on the Internet first. If you jump on the net and ask "Is the US dollar accepted in Panama" as your first question - expect to get flamed. The resident experts know a lot of stuff, and they also have a good idea of what information is readily available on the Internet via basic search, and what isn't. Every now and then we get an "excellent question" moment.
The Rules are simple. Just be nice, help your fellow expat, and no personal attacks. I'm the group owner and Clyde is the moderator (bouncer) who keeps the trolls to a minimum. Please don't try to tell us how to run the group, because we've been doing it for ten years and our clue bags are pretty full. Business owners can post commercial advertisements "about once a month or so" because we like to try to help and support foreigners running businesses, as long as it doesn't get abusive, but occasional announcements are fine, and actually encouraged.
So anyway, consider joining the Americans in Panama Yahoo email group. Once you join, you can adjust your account on the group's home page, so if you don't want to flood your email inbox you can just receive a daily digest, for example. To each his own...
