Construction Of Third Bridge Over Panama Canal Could Start In October 2012
The new designated administrator of the Panama Canal, Jorge Quijano, announced that the construction of a third bridge over the waterway could start between October and November this year. Quijano said on TVN News AM, they have already three consortia shortlisted which were given the specifications for the bridge, and they also have the design of the structure, which will take about a year to build. He said he has met together and independently as permitted by the contract, to tune or make adjustments, as he sees necessary, in the statement to support the amendment before receiving final bids, starting in September.
He added that in October the selected company could be awarded the contract and the order to proceed. Once this selection process culminates the construction of the new structure will begin. This would be one of the longest bridges in the world at 5 kilometers long and 75 meters above sea level, at an estimated cost of $280 million dollars with construction under the responsibility of the ACP. It will be built north of the Gatun Locks and the new post-Panamax locks complex on the Atlantic side of Panama, near Ave. Thelma King and the former Fort Davis in Colon. (Panama America)
