National Assembly Passes Bill 508 - Electoral Code Reforms

Law & LawyersAt 2:12 pm this afternoon, Friday, 14 September 2012, the full body of the National Assembly approved the reforms to the Electoral Code with 40 votes in favor, which have been criticized by sectors of organized civil society and opposition political parties. Meanwhile outside the National Assembly groups who oppose Bill No. 508, which establishes the reforms, were controlled by riot control officers of the National Police. The President of the National Assembly Sergio Gálvez said after approval of the reforms, the objections of the Electoral Tribunal are regrettable, and political. Galvez said the Electoral Tribunal has lost credibility. Galvez said the president, Ricardo Martinelli, will not retreat after the reforms were approved in the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, Bill No. 508 received 22 votes against by the opposition bloc, which are the Democratic Revolutionary Party and the Panameņistas. The head of the Panameņista party caucus, Jorge Iván Arrocha, said these reforms are unconstitutional, and they might file a suit against them after the 2014 elections. (Prensa)

Editor's Comment: And after three weeks of BS, the end result was changed not one iota. All of these shenanigans simply reinforce and further expose the political weakness of the PRD and the Panameņistas.
