Martinelli Signs Bill 508 Into Law, Says Reforms Will Be Good For Panama's Democracy

Law & LawyersPresident Ricardo Martinelli said today, Tuesday, 18 September 2012, that the recently approved electoral reforms would do well for democracy in Panama. During a public event to inaugurate the new facilities of the National Immigration Service on Via Ricardo J. Alfaro (Tumba Muerto) this morning, the President said he read Bill 508, and found nothing that could be detrimental to democracy, so he proceeded ratify (sign) the bill into law. The President said the new law reforming the Electoral Code of Panama, is not unconstitutional, so the change will be good for the country. About the elimination of the "voto in plancha", Martinelli said there is nothing more fair than "one person one vote." He also said "there is nothing more just than the participation of independents, who can aspire to elected office." (Estrella)

Editor's Comment: In a poll taken on the day the National Assembly passed Bill 508, some 63% of respondents said they were in favor of the electoral reforms. So that left the PRD and the Panameñistas sucking hind tit with only 37% of popular support for their vehement complaints and rejections of this bill. Interestingly enough, Martinelli won the election in 2009 with about 63% of the vote. Go figure. They did a pretty good job, mostly through the public statements made by the President of the National Assembly Sergio Galvez, of getting the word out about the "one man, one vote" issue, and that's pretty much what it came down to in the eyes of Juan Seis Pack.
