Panama's PNG's Colombian Union Leader - Sends Him Packing From Tocumen

Panama NewsA Colombian union leader who had traveled to Panama to attend a seminar of workers was deported without explanation by the immigration authorities of that country, industry sources reported in Bogotá. The president of the National Union of Transport Workers (LTSS), Francisco Mora, told Efe by telephone that the deportation of the leader Orlando Olier occurred Tuesday upon his arrival at the international airport in Panama City. Olier had traveled from the Caribbean city of Cartagena to Panama City, invited to a seminar on integrating messaging companies that began yesterday and will go until September 20. The meeting was called to make an assessment of the transport sector in the world and the region, to examine the new methods of hiring, unionization and collective bargaining in companies, especially multinationals involved in messaging.

The union leader, who serves as the General Secretary of the taxi union in Cartagena, had planned to participate in this seminar in his capacity as coordinator of the messaging sector. "Olier was deported without any valid explanation from the authorities in Panama," said Mora, who said his colleague "has no legal problem." The SNTT is a subsidiary of the Confederation of Workers of Colombia, which is the country's main labor organization. (TVN)

Editor's Comment: Panama clearly has a "do not admit" list. Remember that Canadian girl who did a series of reports against mining? Same story. She was turned around at the airport and sent packing back to Canada, with no explanation. Same with this guy. Thanks for coming, PNG, C'ya. I wonder how many people have been simply sent home, never knew why, and it's never made the news.

I also remember the woman that said she was here to train people in some new perfume store, but she didn't have a work visa and they sent her packing too.

Guess I didn't realize they had to have a reason. Every Country has a "no fly" list as well. They don't need to explain why.
