Martinez said he decided to withdraw the proposal in order to contribute "to the country's social peace" while explaining that "at no time did we intend to regulate or restrict access to information or the free exercise of journalism."
On the program "Despierta Panamá" (Wake Up Panama) on SER-TV, the Deputy listened to the proposals put forth by the journalist José Miguel Guerra, who recommended to Martínez that he should make room for a broad debate on the subject. (Estrella)
Editor's Comment: Good call. The draft of Bill 377 was half baked, poorly written, ill conceived, and it left a whole lot of room for interpretation. They were going to try to tackle some of the newly emerging issues regarding the use of the Internet in the modern day (such as adopting a false identity in cyberspace) but they never really thought through all of the unintended consequences. So, back to the drawing board.
