Proposal To Sell Colon Free Trade Zone Lands Now In Second Debate

Law & LawyersWhile in Colon protests raged against Bill 529, which allows for the sale of land in the Colon Free Zone, in the National Assembly the Deputies from the ruling party set full throttle, and declared themselves to be in permanent session yesterday, in order to approve the measure. Less than a day after receiving the Bill from the Commerce Commission, the proposal was placed on the agenda of the day, after the Deputy from the ruling Cambio Democratico party Raul Hernandez asked for the proposal to be urgently approved.

The opposition lawmakers from the Democratic Revolutionary party (PRD) and the Panameńista party delivered their minority reports, calling for the proposal to be canned. The requests were denied by the majority pro-government lawmakers. Panameńista Deputy Miguel Salas denounced that the Executive wants to sell the land of the Colon Free Trade Zone to cover the deficit, and to have more money to finance their campaigns for the 2014 elections.

In response, Hernandez denied that there is an rush to pass the bill, and the debates continue today. (Prensa)
