Because of the problem with the bacterium Clostridium Difficile, visits to patients in the Rafael Hernández hospital in the city of David have been restricted as an alternative measure to prevent further increasing cases of people infected.

"As a health prevention measure for patients who are hospitalized in the Dr. Rafael Hernández regional hospital in David, the medical authorities of this hospital made the decision to restrict visits to one family member per patient, as a temporary measure, starting on Monday 19 November 2012," said the authorities of the Social Security Fund in the province of Chiriqui in press release.

They made this decision to prevent the further spread of the bacterium Clostridium difficile, which is transmitted by contact from person to person by touching the patient, and visitors can be put at risk of acquiring it.

The press release says at this time they are taking all possible bio security measures to control the outbreak, in accordance with established procedures for the control of nosocomial bacteria.

In the province of Chiriqui seven people have been killed by this bacteria, and one of them died from Clostridium difficile in the Rafael Hernandez hospital. (Panama America)

Editor's Comment: Clostridium difficile Clostridium difficile, also known as "CDF/cdf", or "C. diff", is a species of Gram-positive bacteria of the genus Clostridium that causes severe diarrhea and other intestinal disease when competing bacteria in the gut flora have been wiped out by antibiotics. Clostridia are anaerobic, spore-forming rods (bacilli). C. difficile is the most serious cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) and can lead to pseudomembranous colitis, a severe inflammation of the colon, often resulting from eradication of the normal gut flora by antibiotics. In layman's terms - people who have been hospitalized for one thing and placed on strong antibiotics can end up with this bacteria resistant Clostridium difficile as the sole survivor, which then kills you anyway.
