UNESCO Says Casco Antiguo is Still A World Heritage Site

Groups & OrganizationsIn its 37th annual session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, it was decided that the Monument Casco Antiguo-Panama Viejo will maintain its World Heritage status.

In the letter, Panama had the opportunity to reiterate the explanation already given on the status of the Monumental Casco Antiguo-Panama Viejo, which was seen as positive by the Committee members and therefore, they took the decision in favor of Panama.

It was concluded that the marine viaduct of the Coastal Beltway built on the site is not enough reason to change the status of World Heritage of Casco Antiguo-Panama Viejo, and due to this the site is now out of the "World Heritage in Danger" list.

The Government made a commitment to invite a high-level reactive surveillance mission from the World Heritage Centre and then send all the documentation to UNESCO to present it during the 39th meeting of this organization.

However, the World Heritage Portobelo-San Lorenzo, in Colon, will be kept in the “World Heritage in Danger” list after a consensus between Panama and the Committee; however, this does not mean they are out of the list of World Heritage. (Telemetro)
