Varela said he may be in the picture, because he went to receive an Italian government official; however, his name is not on any record or document related to this case.
About his relationship with the former president, Mireya Moscoso, Varela said the Panameńismo Political Party is a democratic group in which they respect the opinions of all its members.
"I am not in politics for the opinion of a single person, but for the future of four million Panamanians," he said.
He also referred to the party hosted by the President of the Assembly, Sergio Gálvez. Varela said Panama does not deserve this kind of politics, because the funds come from Panamanians, and they must be used for the benefit of the people. "Instead of spending public funds we should increase the income of the population," he said.
He said one of his main missions if he becomes President of the Republic will be fighting against corruption.
According to Varela, the alliance between CD and his party came after the government’s agenda was changing its initial path. Regarding his relationship with President Martinelli, he said he first met him as a businessman. (TVN)
