XOKO Restaurant y Tapas Bar

Food & DrinkHaving been in Panama only 10 days, I cannot say that I am ANY kind of expert when it comes to restaurants here. I do know that I have been eating at least 2 meals out a day since arrival, and I`m pretty tired of arroz y pappas frittas. (Just so you know, my Español is muy poco) Iceberg seems to be king of salads and vegetables with meals are non existant.

Panama NewsBUENOS AIRES, Argentina

Two homemade bombs exploded outside the Buenos Aires branches of US businesses before they opened Monday, spreading leaflets that read "Yankees get out of Latin America and Argentina!", authorities said.

(Note: This is important to Panama and the readers of this website because the attacks were specifically against US interests in Latin America.)

Good Morning, How Did You Sleep Last Night?

Money MattersIt's a done deal. The legislature passed the Social Security reforms in the third debate late last night. And, the nation-wide general strike is set for today. It's important to understand why the Torrijos government is stuffing these reforms through at light speed. It's all about the need to borrow about $8 Billion dollars to expand the Panama Canal, a project that would be the largest construction project ever completed in Central America by Central Americans. How's that for a legacy?

And Then, It Rained...

WeatherSo much for the social security reform protests. If there's one thing Panamanians won't do, it's protest in a downpour like this. At 6:30 AM local we are having a classic Panamanian gully-washer. If this keeps up all day, then the protests won't happen. The movement is from the southeast to the northwest, and this has the "feel" of a system that might produce heavy rains all day.

ATM Machines

Money MattersThe many ATM machines found all over the capital city have made Panama living much more convenient for folks like me who prefer to have their retirement checks go to a US bank. Where it used to take a minimum of three weeks (15 working days, and Saturdays don't count) to clear a check on a US bank deposited into a local account, it now takes only the number of days you need to draw the amount needed in chunks of $500.00. It's absolutely wonderful, most of the time.

The New Tony Roma's

Food & DrinkA regular reader sent this in and requested it be posted, but he didn't want to associate his name with the article for obvious reasons. Basically, it's a negative review of the new Tony Roma's restaurant. When the Outback Steak House opened, I ate there exactly once. On the way out the door I told the manager to update his resume. When Shula's opened, our first experience was terrible. But they figured out the scheme and made it work. Unfortunately, this is not the first luke-warm review I've heard about. Hopefully, Tona Roma's will get through the "new" phase and figure things out. I'll ask for a follow-up later, and would like to hear from anyone else who has eaten there.

Protestors Want More Debate on Social Security Reforms

Panama NewsThe primary theme surfacing amongst the protestors who are fighting against the Panamanian government's plans to reform the social security system is that the reforms are happening much too quickly. They say the government is trying to quickly ram through far-reaching changes without sufficient public debate, consideration, or a national referendum. The PRD controls the executive and legislative branches and simply can put the measures through quickly, and it appears that's what they have decided to do. Please comment on this article here.
