Panama Canal Income will be Used to Fight Poverty

Panama NewsPresident Torrijos said in a recent article that nearly $30 million dollars generated by traffic passing through the Panama Canal will be earmarked for education and to fight poverty.

Edemet-Edechi Hunts Down Power Theives

Panama NewsEdemet-Edechi routinely conducts operations to find people who have illegal connections and are stealing power from the grid. The company loses more than $10 million per year from power theft, a cost which ends up being paid by the rest of the customers. The New Bridge Might Open in June

Panama News
From La Prensa and according to the Minister of Public Works, the new Centennial Bridge over the Panama Canal might be opened as soon as the end of June 2005. Carlos Vallarino blamed the previous administration for having built the bridge but not completing the access roads. Panama spent $103.9 million on the bridge that the residents still have not been able to use. (Larger Picture and original Spanish text below.)

Transportation Strike in Colon Forces Lower Fuel Costs

Money MattersLast week transportation union members (basically bus and taxi drivers) shut down the highway between Panama City and Colon for about 18 hours, protesting over the escalating price of fuel. The government responded by having cabinet level meetings with the primary oil companies.

Cuba want the US to Arrest Posada

Panama NewsCuba is asking the US to arrest Luis Posada Carriles, one of the guys who plotted to kill Fidel in Panama back in 2000 (the guy that former Panamanian president Moscoso pardoned right before she left office.) Well, it seems Posada crossed into the US illegally from Mexico, and Cuba wants him arrested and tried as a terrorist.
