High Levels Of Rainfall Threatening Guandú Availability, Raising Prices

Food & Drink#Panama - The traditional "arroz con guandú" (rice and peas), prepared in many homes in Panama, may be conspicuously absent from Christmas and New Years celebrations this year. It is anticipated that because of the “antracnosis” fungus in the guavas of these plantations, the price per pound could exceed $5. Humidity is a factor that stimulates outbreaks of the disease, which in turn is causing a shortage of peas across the country, said Edwin Silvera, the Director of Legumes of the Ministry of Agricultural Development. Today, peas are being sold at traffic lights in Panama City in half pound bags for $2. In supermarkets peas are being sold in the can for between $1.20 and $ 1.50, depending on the brand, which is enough to cook about two cups of rice. Given the high levels of inflation, it is advisable to replace the products for the holiday season that are more expensive than normal, said Yakarta Rios, the President of the Committee on Ethical Consumption. They suggest people could buy the peas now, ahead of time, at more affordable prices and keep them in the freezer. An acceptable alternative for the pocketbook and the palate is canned peas, Rios said. (Dia a Dia)

Editor's Comment: So, the unusually high levels of rainfall caused an increase in the levels of infestation of this fungus, which damaged the crop and is now causing prices to rise. Watch carefully. Between now and Christmas this will be used as an example of "inflation" and political opponents will blame Martinelli. Hey man, this is important stuff. You can't mess with "arroz con guandú" at Christmas time. Really, it's like saying no pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving.

Operation To Confirm Sales Of Bread By Weight

Food & DrinkPanama's Consumer Protection Authority conducted an operation to confirm the presence of scales, the calibration of these instruments, and the prices being charged for bread to verify that retailers are property selling bread by weight as required by a new law that entered into force last week. The operation was conducted in the district of San Miguelito, where health personnel also took the opportunity to assess the hygiene of bakeries and supermarkets in the district. (Telemetro)

Editor's Comment: This "selling bread by weight" thing is a new and major change for the Panamanian consumer. Until now, bakeries would sell bread by the piece - and there were big differences in the quality of the product. Bakers can change their formulas to have more or less air in the bread, meaning all bread is not created equally - some are large but mostly air inside. By charging by weight, the consumers are more likely to know what they are getting for the money. It's a new thing and people are still talking about it. I've received some email about this, all in support of the change, with people saying they are now getting more and better product for less money.

FAQ: How Come There Are No Eggs in Bocas?

Food & DrinkBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Received today via email: "Don, Any idea why we have been out of eggs in Bocas del Toro for almost a week? Is this unique to Bocas or is this a country wide problem? I can't get a straight answer out of anyone. Thanks, Jerry"

I Have No Friggin' Idea: Sorry, but I don't. We have all the eggs we can crack here in Panama City. Maybe it has something to do with living at the end of the supply chain? Just a thought. Does anyone have a better answer? I sure don't.

"The Bread Company" - New Authentic German Bakery in Panama

Food & DrinkBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Panama is a really beautiful country. The people, the nature and the business opportunities are ideal, but one issue for the Europeans in general and especially the Germans is the lack of true, authentic German bread. Mr. Ulrich Schwark and Mr. Peter Stehling, the owners of the Two Oceans Group, had exactly this problem. And then a potential solution unexpectedly presented itself when someone listed a bakery for sale with their Two Oceans real estate group. The two men put their heads together, did the proper due diligence, and made the decision to purchase the business for themselves.

For starters, they hired an Austrian baker and a German pastry baker. The new owners made a substantial investment in the property itself to renovate the showroom to make it nice, and comfortable. Now more than a year has gone by, and they managed to secure the primary contract to supply bread products to all flights departing from the Tocumen International Airport. They create true and authentic German Rye bread, as well as cakes, cookies, and other specialty items that are simply impossible to find anywhere else. They now make Ray bread, Rye bread with nuts, a special 7 grain bread as well as different kind of Baguettes, such as Onion Baguettes, Italian Baguettes, and French Baguettes. For pastries they offer typical German sweets like “Bienenstich”, “Black forest Cake“, Cheese cakes and much more.

The bakery is called "The Bread Company" and is located in Plaza Paitilla. From Ave. Balboa, turn right at the Popeye's restaurant, and The Bread Company will be located on your left hand side, in front of the Banco General. Their telephone number is 399-4901, and their hours are 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm on Saturdays, closed on Sundays.
