Users Doubt About The Training Of The Operators Of The Metro Buses

Cars & TransportationFifteen people injured were the result of two collisions involving two Metro Buses during the month of May.

The first accident was registered on May 4th at 4:48 p.m. between a Metro Bus and a dump truck in in Las Lajas, San Miguelito. That day, 10 passengers were slightly injured.

The other incident left five users injured and it took place last Thursday at the Coastal Band. This collision involved two Metro Buses.

Both accidents brought concern to different groups who defend the rights of public transportation users.

For the representative of the Foundation for the Protection of the Public Transportation Users, Esperanza Mena, the Metro Bus was a project sold by the Government as a system that would provide a quality service; however, this is not happening.

Proofs of this, according to the leader, are the 15 people injured, which, even though they only suffered minor injuries, is still an alarming situation.

Mena recalled the cases of Albertina Poveda and Dr. Sandra Platero, who have been affected by the new transportation system without the company Mi Bus being responsible of their situation.

THEY QUESTION THEIR TRAINING

According to Mena, the accidents involving Metro Buses make them doubt about the training received by the users hired in the company.

In this regard, the representative of the users, before the Directive Board of the Transit Authority and Land Transportation (ATTT), Lucia Perea, called for the company Mi Bus to hire drivers who don’t have a record of traffic violations.

Perea, who also belongs to the Association of Public Transportation Users, Movement of October 23, said there are operators who have the same behavior of those drivers who operated the Red Devils.

Facing the incidents recorded last May, the ATTT and Mi Bus reported both cases are under investigation.

According to the source, if a Traffic Judge determines that the operators are guilty in any way, they will be sanctioned.

Regarding the accusations from the representatives of the users on the mismanagement of the operators, spokesmen reported they have invested one million 700 thousand hours in training their employees through programs offered by the INADEH and the company itself.

Mi Bus assured they will always make sure to provide the appropriate care in the case there are injured people. (Siglo)

ATTT Will Finalize The Inspection Of SONDA Today

Cars & TransportationBy today, Monday, it is expected to know if the National Company of Data Processing, S.A. (SONDA) has complied with the installation of one thousand charging points or if they will receive a higher penalty due to incompliance.

This was said yesterday by Roberto Moreno, director of the Transit Authority and Land Transportation (ATTT), to RPC Radio, adding they've been specifically inspecting, one by one, the logical points where people can deposit money in their Metro Bus cards, and not only verifying if they are operational or not. "If they have not met their goal of one thousand points they will receive a daily fine ($2,080)," he said.

Their term expired eight days ago and since then the authorities have been verifying whether or not their 1,223 recharge points out of the 1,402 from the list provided by SONDA are working.

Until last Friday, the ATTT was able to verify 780 points of sale and for card recharging.

A year and three months ago they started collecting the bus fare through the Metro Bus card, and since then several users have complained about the lack of places to recharge their cards. (Panama America)

Cars & TransportationThe first three wagons in the model trains “Metropolis” from Line 1 of the Metro Subway System have already arrived to Panama.

The wagons, which arrived yesterday at the Manzanillo port, in Colon, from Spain, will be arriving in the city in the next two days.

During its testing period they will operate for free, according to the Metro Secretariat.

During the arrival of the trains, the Metro Secretary Roberto Roy, explained the trains will be going through two major phases: the 'white march', which is when they will be tested and will serve the public for free for 2 to 3 hours a day, easing the crisis in the public transportation system in the city.

After this first test phase, according to Roy, they will proceed with the 'commercial start-up', this is when the system will be running at full capacity with a specific fare and it will be announced to the public with anticipation. This last phase should be starting in the month of March, 2014.

'We are confident that people will be satisfied with this new transportation system, which will run through its own way, without traffic jams or red lights," said Roy.

Metropolis model trains are part of the first lot of 19 cars with three wagons that will run through the city of Panama.

Each train will consist of three wagons with a total length of 52 meters, an approximate height of 3.85 meters by 2.71 meters wide and the capacity to serve up to 250 people per wagon, at the rate of 15,000 people per hour in each direction of the line.

However, he stated the vehicular congestion experienced by drivers in the city is due to the "irresponsibility of governments that did not anticipate the transportation needs of a population in development." (Prensa)

Strong Smoke Smell Caused Panic in A Metro Bus

Cars & TransportationA strange noise and a strong smell of smoke made the passengers in a Metro Bus break its windows in order to escape from it.

The bands apparently overheated, leaving a strong smell that scared the passengers, who started breaking the windows due to their desperation.

Last night, the company Mi Bus, through a statement said the motor extinguisher of the 0841 unit from the route Mano de Piedra-North Corridor activated without the presence of an actual fire, which scared the passengers even more.

The company reported four people were slightly injured in their attempt of evacuating the bus.

According to the statement, all of them received medical attention.

Mi Bus calls out to the population to remain calm when incidents like this take place, because this issue did not put anyone’s integrity at risk.

"We want to remind everyone that the security mechanisms of the vehicle have proven their high level of reliability, and the users must take this into consideration in the case of similar circumstances so they can evacuate the bus as calmly as possible, avoiding additional effects,” concludes the statement.
