Panama is Not Ready To Legalize Drugs

Drug TraffickingAfter the conclusion of the XLIII (43) General Assembly of the OAS in Guatemala, about the fight against drug trafficking and the legalization of cannabis supported by many countries of the region, experts on the subject agreed that Panama is not prepared for this initiative.

On this issue, the Panamanian Foreign Minister Fernando Nunez, said before the international body that legalizing drugs "will aggravate the situation."

This position is shared by the former prosecutor of drugs, Rosendo Miranda, who believes decriminalizing drugs in Panama is not as easy as you might think and this would increase other crimes, he said.

Miranda cited the case of the Netherlands, where after the decriminalization of cannabis, other crimes were increased such as "theft, violence caused by fights and sexual assault."

The source said the Dutch authorities had to implement some regulations to control the excessive consumption. According to Miranda, the possession and use should not be classified as a criminal offense, but administrative. "Special courts must be created with social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists that treat addicts."

Meanwhile, Ana Matilde Gomez, former Procurator-General of the Nation, said in order to consider legalization, "the authorities must address the phenomenon not only from the standpoint of fighting drug consumption, but also seeking for the reduction of the supply," she said.

Gomez concluded by saying it will be hard to reach an agreement in the region because “this crime behaves very differently in each country." The 43 countries of the OAS concluded their meeting without any agreement on the issue of decriminalization of drugs. (Panama America)
