5.7 Earthquake in Bocas del Toro? Really?

EarthquakesAn earthquake of 5.7 degrees on Richter scale occurred in Bocas del Toro causing no damage or casualties, according to the National Civil Protection System. Gladys Concepcion, of the SINAPROC office in Bocas del Toro, revealed the quake was also felt in the mountainous area of Teribe, but no damage was reported. Leonardo Machuca, a correspondent for TVN in Bocas del Toro, stated this is the second tremor in Bocas del Toro so far this month and the twelfth so far this year. (TVN Noticias)

Editor's Comment: That's strange. This earthquake is not being reported by the US Geological Survey or Panama's Instituto de Geociencias. I submitted a copy of the TVN news report to the USGS, asking them to confirm. Did any of you guys up there in Bocas feel this one?

61. Earthquake Shakes Costa Rica - Felt in Panama

EarthquakesBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Last night at 10:26 pm local time, an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook Costa Rica, and the tremors were felt in Panama's Western most province of Chiriqui. The epicenter of the quake was located near Costa Rica's Pacific shoreline, just South of the capital city of San Jose, at coordinates 9.350°N, 84.281°W and a depth of 29.3 km (18.2 miles). The epicenter of this quake was located very close to another earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale which also hit Costa Rica just last week, on Thursday, 20 May 2010. Officials from the Geo Sciences Institute of the University of Panama confirmed the details of the quake, and representatives from Panama's National Civil Protection System said there were no reports of deaths, injuries, or material damage. Smaller earthquakes such as this are common in Panama, and are most frequently felt in the province of Chiriqui, near the border with Costa Rica, the area of Panama which is the most seismically active. They are considered to be "good" earthquakes in that they allow for the gradual and nondestructive release of energy over time, rather than allowing for the pressures and subterranean stresses to build and then release all at once in a massive and destructive earthquake.

5.9 Quake Shakes Costa Rica - Felt in Panama

EarthquakesBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Costa Rica yesterday afternoon at 5:16 pm local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 9.227°N, 84.318°W at a depth of 21 km, in Costa Rica. Although the epicenter was quite some distance away from Panama, a few residents in Panama's Western most province of Chiriqui felt the tremor. There were no reports of deaths, injuries, or significant property damage. These small tremors occur frequently in this area and they seem to be a "good" thing, in that they apparently allow for the regular release of pressure over time, rather than letting it build up for decades and then letting go in one massive and devastating earthquake. Take a look at this historical plotting from the US Geological Survey of all earthquakes in this region since 1990 - the small dots indicated small quakes (there was nothing greater than a 6) with the gold and yellow more shallow, and the greens and blues at deeper depths. There have literally been hundreds of these "routine" quakes, which people have basically learned to ignore. The star indicates the location of yesterday's quake. Can you find it? (Where's Waldo?)

Earthquakes Put Panama on Alert

Earthquakes Recent earthquakes in other countries put on alert to Panama, and governmental authorities announced immediate action to improve the country's ability to respond. Following a meeting at the headquarters of the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), headed by its Director Arturo Alvarado, in which also participated the Minister of the Presidency, Jimmy Papadimitriu, among other authorities, a training program for local governments was established. Alvarado explained Panama should improve its readiness, because earthquakes cannot be accurately predicted, which makes it necessary to verify both government and private infrastructure. They will also conduct inspections to unsure those skyscrapers under construction are prepared to resist a natural event of this magnitude. In the meeting it was established to give $20 million dollars to the Fire Department, for the purchase of equipment, and to improve education and training so they will be better prepared to react to any natural event. The training will begin in communities, schools and universities. In addition, the government will begin an evaluation of each of its buildings, and will request the Municipal government to stringently enforce requirements for the issuance of building permits. Panama Will Send Search and Rescue Experts to Assist in Chile

EarthquakesPanama is preparing to send a group of Search and Rescue experts to Chile to assist in rescue efforts there, following the massive earthquake that struck the South American country on Saturday, official sources said today. The director of the National System of Civil Protection (SINAPROC), Arturo Alvarado, said the mission would consist of 15 rescue workers, four canine units and a paramedic, who would travel to Chile sometime either today or tomorrow on a commercial flight. The rescuers will bring with them specialized equipment to enter buildings and collapsed structures, such as drills, concrete saws and cameras they can deploy to be able to see inside to find trapped victims. Some of the members of this team deploying to Chile recently went to Haiti to provide support there after the 12 January earthquake there. Alvarado said the Search and Rescue (SAR) team is being deployed to Chile in response to an instruction given by the Ministry of Foreign Relations. The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panama, Priscilla de Miro, reiterated today to the government and the people of Chile the support and solidarity of the Panamanian people, after having met with Chile's ambassador to Panama, Juan de Dios Gutierrez. The Chancellery of the Republic will coordinate the support being provided to the Chilean people with the SINAPROC and with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations in Panama (OCHA), according to a press release. EarthquakesJuan de Dios Gutiérrez Soto, Chilean Ambassador to Panama, said there are currently more than 400 students from Panama studying in Chile, and right now they are trying to locate them to determine their status after the powerful earthquake of 8.8 magnitude that struck the country last night. Gutierrez Soto explained that the Chilean government's main objective is to review the registry of victims and the extent of the damage. He said he has established direct communication with the Embassy of Panama in Chile, and that when they achieve some sort of communication with the Panamanian citizens they would provide timely information. Flash Update #9 - Live Reports from Readers - Nada...

EarthquakesBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I'm getting telephone calls from readers who have views of the Bay of Panama from Panama City along Balboa Avenue. They report that the sea is as flat as glass, it's low tide, and there's nothing to report. Good. That's what I expected actually, especially considering that this threat hit precisely at low tide. However, tidal waves seem to have a knack for fooling people. Remember the video of people on the beach, wandering out into the mud flats when the really big tidal wave was about to hit a couple of years ago? If they knew what was coming they would have been running in the other direction. Anyway, hopefully this event will serve as a wake-up call, and a reminder that we do live next to the ocean. And when Mother Nature wants to, she can barf all over us. Now, let's turn our attention to the people in Chile.

Flash Update #7 - Tsunami ETA for Panama City - NOW

EarthquakesBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - According to the warnings issued earlier this morning by the National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the ETA for "Balboa Heights" (Panama City) was 14:57Z (9:57 am local) or right about now. If you live somewhere near the Pacific Ocean, you might want to stick a video camera out the window. It's low tide right now, and personally I don't think much is going to happen, however tidal waves seem to be experts in defying common sense. Better safe than sorry, right. Stay alert for the next two hours after the ETA passes.

Flash Update #4 - SINAPROC Says Tsunami Threat for Panama Reduced (Wrong?)

EarthquakesThe general director of the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), Arturo Alvarado said Saturday the Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii warned that a tsunami warning for Panama was reduced. We have been asked to keep on "monitoring", but it is something significant, in Alvarado said RPC Radio. Alvarado's statements come after the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning to all countries of the Pacific coast after the earthquake of 8.8 degrees on the Richter scale recorded in Chile. The list was included Panama. (Source: La Prensa)

Editor's Comment: With all due respect, and unless he has some information that I don't have, the Director of SINAPROC is incorrect. I am looking at the warnings issued by the same source, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, and there has been no reduction issued for Panama. I want to know his source of information. Anyway, for what it's worth, SINAPROC says the warning for Panama has been reduced. I think he's wrong.

Flash Update #3 - Tsunami ETA at Panama Pacific Low Tide

EarthquakesBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I just checked the current Pacific tides for Panama and thankfully, we will be seeing the next low tide at about 8:30 am, which just happens to coincide precisely with the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) for the possible tsunami that might be generated from the massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile last night. Anyway, that's a piece of good news, and if this earthquake does in fact generate a tsunami, then the effect might be mitigated somewhat by the local low tide. Stay tuned...

Flash Update #2 - TSUNAMI WARNING NOW IN EFFECT FOR PANAMA

EarthquakesBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Don't confuse yourselves. The reporting out of New York is incorrect. The National Weather Service, Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, has issued a TSUNAMI WARNING for the Republic of Panama. This is not an advisory, an alert, or some other lesser type of message. In other words, this is the strongest message they send out. Read it for yourself here: http://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/. ETA for Panama is 8:30 AM local. If nothing occurs, remain vigilant until at least 10:30 AM local along the entire Pacific coast of Panama.

    8.8-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Central Chile

EarthquakesBy ALEXEI BARRIONUEVO - RIO DE JANEIRO — A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital of Santiago for 90 seconds and sending tsunami warnings from Chile to Ecuador. The quake downed buildings and houses in Santiago and knocked out a major bridge connecting the northern and southern sections of the country. It struck at 3:34 a.m. local time and was centered about 200 miles southwest of Santiago, at a depth of 22 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The epicenter was some 70 miles from Concepcion, Chile’s second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live. Phone lines were down in Concepcion as of 7:30 a.m. and no reports were coming out of that area. The quake in Chile was 1,000 times more powerful than the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that caused widespread damage in Haiti on Jan 12, killing at least 230,000, earthquake experts reported on CNN International. The U.S. Geological Survey and eyewitnesses reported more than a dozen aftershocks, including two measuring magnitude 6.2 and 6.9. “We have had a huge earthquake,” said Michelle Bachelet, Chile’s president, speaking from an emergency response center in an appeal for Chileans to remain calm. “We’re doing everything we can with all the resources we have.”

Mrs. Bachelet said that the government had dispatched three emergency response teams to coastal areas. She confirmed an initial death total of six people, five of them in the Maule region and one in the Araucanía region. “Without a doubt, with a quake of this kind, of this size, of this magnitude, we can’t rule out that there are other deaths and probably injuries,” Mrs. Bachelet told reporters. Eyewitnesses on Facebook and Twitter reported that the quake was felt from Japan to Argentina. The quake struck at the end of the Chilean summer vacation, with hundreds of thousands of people expected to be traveling back home this weekend. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica. It said a tsunami could also hit Hawaii later in the day, the Associated Press reported.

Lying along the mountainous Andean coast, Chile is accustomed to earthquakes. The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area as Saturday’s quake on May 22, 1960. That quake, which registered a magnitude 9.5, killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the West Coast of the United States.

3.8 on Richter Scale near Puerto Armuelles at 6:32 pm Yesterday

EarthquakesAn earthquake of 3.8 degrees on the Richter scale struck at 6:32 pm near the border region between Panama and Costa Rica. The National System of Civil Protection reported the event was felt mainly in Puerto Armuelles and banana producing zone in the district of Baru, without causing any harm. According to reports from the Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama (UP) a total of twelve earthquakes have already occurred in the border area between Panama and Costa Rica, all of them in January 2010. The strongest of these measured 5.2 degrees on the Richter scale occurring on 23 January, with an aftershock of 4.7 degrees on January 24, being the most recent earthquake. Four Moderate Earthquakes Shake Panama

EarthquakesThe Director of the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC), Arturo Alvarado, called for people living in areas close to the Costa Rican border to remain calm, after four strong earthquakes struck the area on Saturday. Alvarado acknowledged the border area was hit in the early morning hours yesterday by a quake of 5.5 degrees on the international Richter scale. Shortly after, there was a second quake of 4.7 magnitude. The same area were then shaken by a third quake of 5.1 degrees. The fourth earthquake measured 5.2 degrees. The movements are associated with the phenomenon of subduction in Southern Costa Rica, where the Cocos plate is sliding under the Panama microplate. Alvarado said the tremors have not caused either casualties nor property damage. But he warned that in the next few hours there could be more similar earthquakes, and he urged people to remain calm and take preventive measures. A report by the Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama said the four earthquakes recorded by seismographs on Saturday had a depth of no more than 10 kilometers. (Source: La Prensa)

Cluster of Moderate Earthquakes Shake Panama

EarthquakesBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - A cluster of relatively minor moderate earthquakes have struck the area near the border between Panama and Costa Rica. There have been at least seven earthquakes in the last five days. All of this activity has occurred practically in the same area or along the same fault line, centered around 8.385°N, 83.023°W, located about 20 miles SSE of Golfito, Costa Rica and 40 miles West of David, Panama.

    • 4. Saturday, 23 January 2010, 4:08 am local time, 5.2 on the Richter Scale
    • 5. Saturday, 23 January 2010, 4:43 am local time, 4.7 on the Richter Scale
    • 6. Saturday, 23 January 2010, 9:36 am local time, 4.8 on the Richter Scale
    • 7. Saturday, 23 January 2010, 9:43 am local time, 4.9 on the Richter Scale

"Swarms" or "Clusters" of Earthquakes in Panama: Back in May 2006 there was a similar string of stronger quakes in the same area. At times the government of Panama deploys seismologists to monitor activity within the (supposedly) dormant Volcan Baru. There have been no reports of damage or injuries associated with this most recent series of earthquakes. If you would like to know more about Earthquakes in Panama click on the link to visit the topic header, and scan down through the collection of articles documenting recent activity. With the recent disaster in Haiti on everyone's mind it's easy to forget that these minor quakes are actually a good thing in that they release the pent-up energy between the neighboring plates without causing any significant harm. The ones you have to worry about are like in Haiti, when they only go off once every 250 years or so. You couldn't pay me to live in Spokane. That sucker goes off once every 500 years, and it's way over-due.

Earthquakes By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale occurred at 2:06 am this morning, Tuesday, 19 January 2010. According to the US Geological Survey the epicenter of the quake was located at 8.571°N, 82.652°W in the area of the border between Panama and Costa Rica at a depth of 35.9 miles. Panamanian Rescue Workers Pull Surviors From Collapased Building in Haiti

Earthquakes PORT AU PRINCE. Amid the smell of death, despair, hunger, and looting miracles still occur after the earthquake in Haiti. Yesterday the group of Panamanian rescue workers from the SINAPROC, working together with similar units from the Dominican Republic, managed to save the lives of a 70 year old woman and her 19 year old son, who were trapped in the rubble of the building where they lived. Another miracle occurred when dogs from the Panamanian team located another person who was trapped in a collapsed building who was also saved. Of the thirteen Panamanians who were reported missing, ten have returned to Panama and the other three are still being unaccounted for. (Source: La Estrella)

Editor's Comment: Thank God for those guys. The rescue workers from SINAPROC are doing what they can and thus far they have saved at least three people. When they get back, hopefully the Panamanian government will debrief them extensively, learn from their experiences there, and spend the money to improve the resources and capabilities of search and rescue teams here in Panama. Kudos, good on 'ya. Keep it up, and be safe.

There Are Thirteen Panamanians Missing in Haiti

Earthquakes Thirteen Panamanians are missing as a result of last Tuesday's earthquake which shook the ground and left Port-au-Prince in ruins. The charge d'affaires of Panama in Haiti, Eufenio Taylor, Panama's only authority in the field, has a small piece of paper tucked into his shirt pocket where he has written the thirteen names. Four are tourists and the others are Panamanians living in the different neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince. Some of them arrived as employees of Digicel, who is using Panamanian technicians expand their communications infrastructure. "The truth is we do not know where they lived, and things are difficult. I'm doing everything I can but there is no electricity, no telephones and, moreover, there is nothing left of the Panamanian Embassy, it collapsed completely," said Taylor. Taylor came to Imani, a border town on the Dominican side of the country, to receive the Panamanian rescue workers sent by the Panamanian government to join in and assist the efforts of other international relief agencies who are tirelessly working to search for and assist survivors. The Panamanian team has been traveling for two days, and they bring with them an aid package that contains food and water, as well as rescuers, firefighters, three coroners, canine units and other Panamanian volunteers. The arrival to the Haitian capital has been complicated due to the situation on the ground. The 22 Panamanian breathe anxiety, in arriving at the disaster area. In the capital city they have already opened six common graves to remove the corpses from the streets. Things were bad enough in the capital city. But yesterday, 72 hours after the earthquake, that which was feared started to take shape. Haitians began to get desperate and they started looting what is left standing in the city. There is even talk of the fear that international aid can be targeted. Some of the injured were taken to hospitals in the Dominican Republic. The horizon is so bleak that the most optimistic talk about 50% of infrastructure destroyed. (Source: GUIDO BILBAO for La Estrella)

U.N. relief effort thwarted; Paul Farmer, an old Haitian hand, talks about the challenges

Earthquakes A UNICEF cargo plane carrying medical kits, blankets and tents desperately needed by quake-devastated Haitians attempted to land in Port-au-Prince today, but was unable to do so for unknown reasons and returned to Panama where UNICEF has been gathering emergency supplies. It was symbolic of a frustrating day as the United Nations and its international partners geared up relief efforts after Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon gave the order to release $10 million from its central emergency fund. U.N. plans were hampered by Haiti’s fractured infrastructure and the death of dozens of its own staff members working in Port-au-Prince. “It’s really a logistics nightmare,” said Dr. Paul Farmer, a Harvard medical professor and U.N. deputy special envoy to Haiti. “Implementation is the hardest part: getting the stuff to the people who really need it.” Farmer, who has worked in Haiti for 27 years, said the capital's commercial port is “basically shut down,” thwarting efforts to bring in supplies by sea. Air traffic is backed up, with planes jockeying to land in a minimally functioning airport. U.N. officials, including former President Bill Clinton, now the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, gathered in New York today to make strategic decisions on international rescue and relief efforts. U.N. officials are trying to coordinate with Haitian counterparts as to what should land first from the outpouring of choices: medical supplies from the United States, or search and rescue teams with specially trained rescue dogs from Germany.
