'Quantum of Solace': The Bond curse chronicles

Entertainment CTV.ca - Plagued with a slow, steady list of mysterious troubles, rumors of a James Bond jinx on the set of "Quantum of Solace" have been shaking up cyberspace faster than 007 could down a martini. Of course, if a Bond curse came packaged in the shape of Halle Berry, aka "Jinx" in "Die Another Day," the cast and crew wouldn't mind. But a string of disasters, as the 22nd Bond film moves from one location to the next around the world, has people wondering if this jinx might mean big trouble. Gangster Love - Date: February 20, 2008. Location: Panama City. Manifestation: Bond crew members mugged "Don't blame us for stealing from rich Hollywood gringos." That's probably the logic Panama City thugs who robbed an advance party of Bond crew members. To combat these muggings and thefts of set equipment, "Quantum of Solace" producers asked a rival gang to protect the cast and crew. The move should have restored order, but instead it enraged the original crooks and escalated the incidence of petty thefts on set. Fears on set rose to such a degree that local police were put on the case, vowing to shoot anyone on sight who hassled the filmmakers. But tensions escalated as people worried that the police would accidentally kill someone. Bond 22's bad luck didn't stop there. Panama officials had hoped the film would boost the local economy. News of the thefts, and the bad press they brought to Panama City, only made officials furious with the Bond production. Was a curse at work here? Anyway you look at it the small-time gangsters got away with murder. Bond 22 got off on the wrong foot. (more)

Obituary: Doug Hayward - The Inspiration for "The Tailor of Panama"

EntertainmentBy Veronica Horwell for The Guardian - Doug Hayward's distinctive sense of style came out of his working-class childhood, a world where men like his dad, who had laboured all week in mucky boiler suits, went out of a Friday night scrubbed, shining and metamorphosed by their best - their only - suits, pressed to perfection. He shared the satisfaction of the better persona that a man puts on with proper tailoring, and for almost 50 years, until his death at the age of 73, he suited blokes like himself, only with more money - movie stars and footballers and snappers and hacks and even Americans. He upheld the centuries old British tradition in which male style ascends, and transcends, classes. (more)

Entertainment

By text and photos by DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - The Red Bull "Wings Over Amador" air show was held this weekend on Sunday afternoon, 20 April 2008, at the Figali Convention Center marina. To warm up the crowd before the air show began there were performances by wake boarders and a guy who could surf the wake behind a speed boat (pretty cool.) Three guys also parachuted from a helicopter, and the airplanes flew low through inflatable pylons set on barges in the bay. (more)

Prison Break in Panama - The Third Season

Entertainment

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Sometime last year I received an email from Michael Glenn, one of the writers for the "Prison Break" television series. He explained that in the third season the primary characters had escaped to Panama, only to get thrown into prison there (here.) He wanted to know if I could help him with regards to what it's really like inside of a Panamanian prison, so I said sure, why not? I have visited inmates at most of the big prisons in Panama on dozens of occasions and figured it would be both fun and interesting. Over the next several weeks we exchanged emails, with Michael asking questions and me answering his questions to the best of my ability. And hey man, I got paid - they sent me a DVD box set of the second season, a t-shirt (which my son adopted), and a nice thank you note. (more)

Reports of Problems with DirectTV

Entertainment

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - There have been sporadic but consistent reports of billing and administrative problems from the people who use Direct TV service here in Panama. They usually sound just like this one - "I just got an email from Direct TV Panama. They have graciously added MLB to my service and automatically added $10/month to my bill. This is the same company that increased the NFL package by 500% last year and informed the public two weeks after the start of the season. Watch your bill! This crap should be illegal but is not. They could theoretically mess up your credit, and surely take a day out of your life to fight them. If there was another service I'd use it." Anyway, I have not seen the bill or spoken with Direct TV and I'm sure they have their side of the story, but in any case just pay attention to your bill if you're using this service.

Students help on James Bond set

EntertainmentBy Niketa Kumar for the GW Hatchet.com - Not many doctoral residents can add "James Bond movie" to their résumés. This spring, residents in GW's School of Medicine and Health Science's emergency medicine program worked as physicians for the cast and crew of the new James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace." Residents rotated doing one-week stints for six weeks during filming in Chile and Panama. "During the stunts people broke legs and arms," said Christopher Lang, an emergency medicine professor who oversaw the residents who worked in Chile. "There was dehydration and skin infection. If someone needed further attention, we made sure that the hospitals had the appropriate standard of care and communicated with the doctors." (more)

Cuban Troupe on Panama Stage

EntertainmentPanama, Apr 5 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban theater company Teatro de la Luna made its successful debut at the 3rd International Stage Arts Festival of Panama, with a performance that had a long ovation by the audience. The four members of the group presented a work called "Delirio Habanero" at the National Theater in Panama City, during the second day of the event, which will conclude on April 11. Organizers of the Festival said this is the first time Cuba was present in this event, like Uruguay. The show opened on Thursday night with the presentation of a dance company called Lola Lince (Mexico), one of the 15 groups from 10 different countries. "Delirio Habanero" was held in the ruins of an old bar, closed in 1967, where a hypothetical meeting between Cuban music star Benny More and Cuban-born salsa singer Celia Cruz took place.

The Miss Reef 2008 Bikini Contest at Playa Venao

Entertainment

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Over the weekend there was a surfing competition and the Miss Reef 2008 bikini contest. Check out the exceptionally cool guys at dealante.com for photos and details. Two Costa Rican chicks won first and second place, and Panamanian Aileen Crespo took third. In short, who cares who won. There's no such thing as a bad bikini contest in my mind. Wait, that's a double negative. What I meant to say was bikini contests are good. Speedo contests, on the other hand, are generally a bad idea...

Online Betting Up on Panama Websites

Entertainment online-casinos.com - Online betting increased a 87.8 percent in Panama. Legal online sportsbooks licensed in Panama registered around US$ 26.3 million in revenues in 2007, a 87.8 percent increase over 2006's US$ 14 million, according to a report from the Junta de Control de Juego (Gambling Control Committee) in Panama published this week by isa-guide.de. This week Secretary Raúl Cortizo authorised an unidentified company to administrate and operate ten sub-licenses for online casinos and ten sub-licenses for online betting sportsbooks. Six agencies are already operating in Panama City, complying with all the requirements demanded by resolution 65, October 25th 2002, which regulates online gambling activities licensed by the Republic. Panama licensed entities are required to "show us their credentials, their financial sources, experience and people that are part of them, so they are investigated by the state”, said Cortizo. Currently licensed online sportsbooks in Panama paid out US$ 19.1 million, 56.9 percent more than in 2006, and reported an income of US$ 7.1 million in 2007, up 18.2 percent on the previous year. The Panamanian state coffers receive US $20,000 a year for each sub-license for operating this activity, and US$ 10,000 in compensation for goodwill.

Huge Hooter Mannequin Mania - They're Everywhere

Entertainment

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Consider this to be part two of my ongoing investigation into a crazy phenomenon that's been popping out at me from all over the city. First, it was in the Multicentro Mall in Paitilla. And then today, there was more than just a couple of handfuls in the Albrook Mall, which I consider to be a family forum, fit for all ages. It seems with more and more women electing to have plastic surgery the makers of mannequins have decided to give people what they want. My girlfriend said "they do it with guys too - have you ever checked out some of the packages on those guys?" Err, no, not really, but I'll take your word for it... (Video Follows Below, In Depth Investigation Continues.) Hey, this is serious stuff. Millions of dollars of consumer spending is at stake. Next up, hidden camera man - to catch the guys walking into stuff as they stare at the huge hooters in the window.

A Sign of the Times - Huge Hooter Mannequin

Entertainment

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - As a responsible and serious investigative journalist it's my duty to remain alert and observant for changes in the environment and to make note of those important changes. For instance - recently more women have been choosing to have elective surgery. And apparently they buy their swim wear in this place. Most guys won't admit it but we're actually closet mannequin fans. Yeah, it's dumb, and it's a guy thing - but there they are. And these are the biggest hooters I've ever seen on a female mannequin in my entire life. I mean, you can't miss these puppies. If you want you can see for yourself at the Multicentro, third floor (I think.) This has been a community service announcement. (more)

Hey, Officer Rivieri - Chill, Dude...

Entertainment

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I'm sorry, this was just too funny to pass up. Here's some fat-assed cop in Baltimore venting rage on a couple of 14 year-old kids for skateboarding in public. Apparently what really pissed off "Officer Rivieri" is the kids calling him "dude." This has nothing at all to do with Panama, and I'm sure the kids were terrified of an over-the-top (dumb assed) cop going off on them in a rage, but try this. Play the tape once, and then play it again and you'll see the real reason why this guy is pissed off. He has to wear those pants and drive in that dumb little car. He's been both spayed and neutered, and he apparently doesn't like it. Wait, I have to call Baltimore... If this guy didn't look like a cross between an Umpa-Loompa and a bumble bee it wouldn't be so bad. Hey, try this - run his speech with a "Daffy Duck" accent (makes it even more funny.)

Correction - James Bond Film Crew Was Not Robbed By Gangs

EntertainmentBy MIRNA OSPINO for the Panama America - The Panamanian National Police denied today that the film crew or production team in Panama filming the new James Bond film "Quantum of Solace" have been assaulted by gang members. A police spokesman clarified that nothing of the kind has actually happened, in response to a question raised due to a report that appeared in a British newspaper saying that equipment used in the film have been stolen by gang members from Santa Ana, where several scenes are being filmed. Velkis Vega, Chief of the Tourism Police, met with the production crew to guarantee the safety and security of the film crew, and to emphasize that there have been no incidents of theft, and that the production crew have not reported any problems to the police. This newspaper (the Panama America) published that members of the production crew working on the new James Bond film were assaulted during the first few days of filming that started last Friday in several locations in the country. This week the production and filming crew moved to another location in the French Plaza, where the offices of the National Institute of Culture (INAC) were turned into the "Andean Grand Hotel", where James Bond, played by British actor Daniel Craig will be attacked.

Quantum Of Solace - Taking a Sunday Off from Filming

Entertainment

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Today the crews filming the new James Bond film "Quantum Of Solace" in Panama took a day off. Filming started in Panama on Thursday and will continue in Panama through 21 February. And again, I remain impressed by the tenacity of the British paparazzi. They've spent the last couple of days doing their thing - working to grab stills and video from perches near the filming sets and in some cases have been giving the local police fits. I heard police officers "detained" one of the guys for more than six hours. They actually took him against his will to the police station and made him stay there all day. He was eventually hauled before a judge and fined for something, and I can't wait to find out for what (because he was not breaking any laws, he just went to change some tapes.) But here's the real kicker - when the police returned his camera and video cassettes he discovered they had used his camera to record over and effectively erase the tapes. Can anyone explain that to me? The Panamanian National Police are now working to protect the sanctity of the production set? What the hell? (more)
