Air Force Staff Sergeant Loses Everything In Apartment Fire

Groups & Organizations(Update: Adds physical mailing address for material donations.)

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I am a member of an organization called the "Association of Spanish Flyers." I spent most of my time while serving in the Air Force as a Spanish linguist, flying airborne intelligence collection, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions on C-130's, RC-135's, and AWACS all over Latin America. The guys I worked with during those years are members of this association, mostly now retired. Some of the guys who were the young guns when I was on active duty are now high ranking NCO's, and over the weekend I learned of an apartment fire in the area of Omaha, Nebraska.

Staff Sergeant Marcus Brodman is a young Spanish linguist currently assigned to the 97th Intelligence Squadron at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. Last Friday he lost all of his possessions in an apartment fire. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the fire. Unfortunately, however, Marcus had just moved into this new apartment just days earlier and he did not have time to transfer his homeowners insurance policy to the new apartment. The fire was caused by his new roommate, who accidentally started the fire when trying to cook something. Marcus is currently attending the Air Force Leadership School, and he is scheduled to deploy to the Middle East immediately upon graduation. When I first heard of this fire, Marcus didn't even have a flight suit...

If You Can Help: Marcus is a young, single military guy with few possessions - all of which have now been lost. I never ask my readers to do anything, but if you can help this kid out with a small donation it would be greatly appreciated. Once, several years ago when I was still on active duty I was in a similar situation, and believe me - even $20 bucks can make a difference. Anyway, please do what you can. You can make a donation via PayPal to the email address marcus.brodman@gmail.com - and thanks.

Update: Physical Mail Address: Someone asked in the comments for a mailing address so they can send useful items. Marcus is staying with a friend, and the address is: Marcus Brodman, 3051 Pease Dr., Bellevue, NE 68123. Please send any physical donations of items there. And, thanks again.

Beach Litter Cleanup - Saturday, 26 Sept 2010 - Costa del Este

Groups & Organizations By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Received today via email: "Dear Litter Picker-Uppers, Sunday, September 26 is Beach Cleanup Day in Panama. There will be volunteers working beaches all around Panama. It is sponsored by Panama Audubon, Panana Verde, Pro Mar, and Ancon. There are others, as well. I have volunteered with Panama Audubon to make a video document of their activities at Costa del Este. This will be produced to be used in their existing school program on the environment. All of us know that one day of cleaning a beach will not solve the problem. We hope to increase awareness, while realizing the lifetime of changes that will be needed. Panama Audubon will be at Costa del Este with activities running from 8:30am to 11:30am. Mangroves are a source of life and protection ... keep them free of contamination. Marco, Los Altos de Cerro Azul"

Question - Where Exactly?: Costa del Este is a big place. Is there a specific location where people will be meeting? Please provide a telephone number or email address for the coordinator of this activity. Also (FYI) high tide on Sunday morning, 26 September 2010, will occur at 5:15 am. Sunrise that day will occur at 6:07 am. Low tide will occur at 11:30 am. So, the litter picker-uppers will have no water to deal with, and mud flats for your imagery.

Spay Panama Weekend at Cerro Azul

Groups & OrganizationsBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Received via email: "Hello Don. I just received this report from Sylvie on the Spay Panama weekend we had here in Cerro Azul. I thought you might be interested in reading it. Since moving to Panama 3 1/2 years ago, I still have a hard time driving down our mountain and seeing all the malnourished animals. This is truly a great organization. We still love to read the guide, thanks so much for your time you put into to it. Rachelle"

Here's The Report: "Hi, First of all, thank you so much for your support; we have made a difference in our community which directly benefits 114 dogs and 27 cats, and this will avoid plenty of unwanted litters! All animals were sterilized and dewormed, they received vitamins and were sprayed against fleas and ticks, and they also had their ears cleaned. The dogs over 3 months of age got rabies vaccines and none of the dogs will run the risk of TVT (Transmittable Venereal Tumor) via copulation now. Here is a link to the full report. Sadly, three dogs were abandonned this weekend, so please let me know if you can help me find them a home. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me on sylviehuyskens@hotmail.com or 297 7271. Kind regards, Sylvie"

Editor's Comment: I have always supported the events sponsored by both the American Society and the VFW here in Panama - two great organizations we as foreigners can be proud of. This annual 4th of July BBQ is another fantastic opportunity to meet other members of our community of English speaking expatriates who live here in the Republic of Panama. If you're a Veteran of the Armed Forces please consider joining the VFW, and anyone can join the American Society. They are starting a drive towards recruiting new members, expanding their base, and reaching out to some of the newly arriving members of our community. In any case, I'll be there on Sunday with my family, enjoying the food and celebrating our nation's 234th birthday. Did you know that the flags of 27 nations (including Panama's) consist of only red, white, and blue. There's a reason for that - emulation - an even more sincere form of flattery. In any case, I'll see you at the party.
