Well, It's About Damn Time (McAfee Finally Gets A Clue)

Internet & TechnologyBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - For about the last six months I've been getting sporadic email from readers telling me the McAfee Site Advisor service was saying there was some kind of a problem or exploit on Panama-Guide.com. I started writing to these guys, complaining, asking for more information, asking them what the problem was so I could correct it, etc. I wrote several times and they never got back to me. Over the last two days I "ratcheted up" my noise level, threatening them with legal action if they continued to ignore me, etc. Today they finally heard me and I just received an email saying "Dear Don Winner, Thank you for taking the time to inquire about the SiteAdvisor web safety analysis of your website. We apologize any inconvenience this has caused. SiteAdvisor senior engineers have cleared this domain for a green Web safety rating switch. Thanks again for your interest. Sincerely, Patricia McAfee SiteAdvisor." Well, golly, thanks folks. You painted my site "red" for no apparent reason, ignored my repeated requests for information or assistance, and didn't respond until I started going ballistic. Gee, thanks for removing the (bogus) warning that never should have been there in the friggin' first place. Awful nice of ya'...

Now You Can Follow Panama Guide on Twitter

Internet & Technology By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - For all of you who are accustomed to using new technology to keep abreast of what's happening in the world, you can now follow Panama Guide on Twitter. I have established several real-time information feeds to stream into the Panama Guide Twitter page, of course all in English and all real-time. For example several news sources are streaming there such as Reuters and AP, as well as email postings to the Americans in Panama Yahoo group. So, in short, if you're following us on Twitter via your cell phone or mobile device, you will be instantly alerted to anything newsworthy happening in or about Panama, just so long as it gets picked up by a major wire service such as Reuters or AP, me here at Panama Guide, or the 4,000+ members of the Americans in Panama Yahoo group. In short, if you're dialed in you'll have a clue. Tweet, tweet. This is a pretty cool convergence of technology. Just as long as cow's don't fly we should be fine. (@Panama_Guide).

Cable Onda Customer Service in David - It Sucks There, Too... (Surprised?)

Internet & Technology

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Received this morning via email: "Dear Don, After reading your article, a year of being posted, I finally came out with the answer why we, all Cable Onda customers have to sit down for hours before being attended: MSN Messenger. I live in David, Chiriqui (I still do not know what in the hell I was thinking of when I moved in here), and I transferred services from Panama City to this "city". Went to Cable Onda Office, guess what? 15 people waiting and just one rep. attending. Awesome! Got to sit right by the entrance, yet there's a gap that allows you to see the reps computer, in such a limited way yet I could see what was going on. I was seeing these old lady sitting in front of the customer perhaps wondering why is it taking so long for just a 5 min. question (she needed to change addresses for her service). Then I saw a MSN Messenger window popping up...and another..and another...well those 5 minutes for the old lady became half an hour." (more)

Cable Onda Finally Came For Their Modem (Grin)

Internet & Technology

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Remember a few weeks back when I finally hit my "I can't take it anymore" limit with Cable Onda as an Internet provider? At that time I called them, and told them they could come and pick up their equipment any time they wanted, that I was canceling my service, that I was not going to go to their offices and sign anything, and that basically I was firing them. Well, today, they finally came by to get their modem, and it was nice to be able to wave goodbye once and for all to Cable Onda. I now use www.panetma.com for broadband Internet access and I really could not be happier. Oh, and as a result of this Cable Onda thing my office telephone number of 399-4750 is no more. I think I can live with that. Call my cell or hit me on Skype at don.winner.

"La Critica" Website Defaced by "Latin Hack Team 2009" Over Gaza

Internet & Technology

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - This evening the front web page of the La Critica newspaper in Panama City, Republic of Panama, was hacked by a group that signed their work "Latin Hack Team 2009." They spray painted graffiti on the site that said "hacked by Rayok3nT Mientras ustedes la pasan de mil Maravilla con su familia en gaza muchos lloran por sus hijos!!! LatinHackTeaM 2009 hackers por la libertad!!" (Hacked by Rayok3nT While you spend a thousand marvels with your family in Gaza many cry for their children! Latin Hack Team 2009, Hackers for Freedom). Busy guys - try doing a Google search for Rayok3nT - this is what they do.

paNETma.com - "Ridiculously Fast Internet Access ..."

Internet & Technology

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - You're going to be hearing me talking about these guys often. paNETma.com is now my Internet service provider, replacing Cable (Spat!) Onda. They installed my connection a few weeks ago and at that time they had a backlog of installs waiting and they wanted me to hold off on singing their praises. Well, they have caught up and are now putting up personal dishes all over the place. This is a point-to-point service and they have to have a direct line of sight from your location back to one of their towers, but let them figure that out. What matters is that you get a really damn fast and reliable connection for less than would would be paying with anyone else. I'm a happy customer, and hopefully these guys will be taking over the Internet world here in Panama. Salud!

IPTV Makes Rapid Strides in Latin America

Internet & Technology By Eve Sullivan, TMCnet Editor - IPTV (Internet Protocol television) is emerging as the buzzword in Latin American’s telecommunications industry, as several operators have either started testing the waters or intend to do so. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, “Internet Protocol Television Services Markets in Latin America,” finds that IPTV service is beginning to see widespread deployments in the region, as traditional telecommunications service providers try to complete a triple-play offer. “Traditional telecommunications providers are increasingly feeling the heat of competition from cable TV service providers bundling TV, Internet, and telephony,” explains Ignacio Perrone, industry manager at Frost & Sullivan. “To retain their market share and reduce churn, they may also have to join the IPTV bandwagon and increase their wallet-share among their client base.” (more)

Meet Me On Skype

Internet & Technology

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - A lot of people who live and work in Panama rely on Skype to communicate with loved ones back home. It's a relatively cheap and reliable alternative to standard "wire" telephone services. My Skype address is don.winner so feel free to add me to your address book if you want. I know there are other inexpensive alternatives for VOIP and Internet calling plans. What are you guys using? Please let us all know via the comments. Thanks.

Test Your Connection on Speedtest.net

Internet & Technology

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Can you tell I'm having fun? Try this - go to speedtest.net, select the server in Atlanta Georgia, and test the speed of your Internet connection. With Cable Onda (spat!) I was getting about 1,500 download and 500 upload, max. With my new (can't tell you yet) connection, I just tested at 7,792 download and 5,871 upload. Yes, Virginia, that is a tent in my pants and I am actually very happy to see you... (grin.) (Grin again.) And by the way, I "can't tell you yet" because they already have a back load waiting for installation, and they are afraid that if I start promoting them then they might generate some unreasonable expectations. Whatever. Like we used to say on the playground behind the Liberty Street Elementary school - "I got mine!"
