Ramos Will Still Run For Deputy And Asks Politicians To Seek For Peace

PoliticsThe candidate running for deputy in the PRD, Kathy Ramos, went to the Judicial Investigations Department (DIJ) after the murder of her husband, the lawyer Juan Ramón Messina.

While she was leaving, Ramos said “it is devastating to me as a mother, this should never happen again. My condition as a woman, mother and politician makes me think this through and I want to ask all political parties to finally seek peace,” she said.

She confirmed she will still run for deputy, because not doing so would let her husband down. She also said “we are still defending our position about the threat received by my husband from the deputy of the PRD, Raúl Pineda."

“We don’t want this to happen again and we believe everybody should seek peace. My team of lawyers will be in charge of the judicial process,” said Messina’s widow.

On the other hand, Ramos’s lawyer, Alfredo Vallarino said they will handle the technical part and will proceed with the evidence they have.

“The person who killed Messina did not speak to him, it is also a fact that the victim said he was threatened by Pineda, minutes before this happened, there was also someone with Pineda this morning at a television medium that was also near the crime scene, these are many coincidences if you think about what Messina said,” said the lawyer.

“I am not directly pointing my finger at Pineda, but there are certain events that must be investigated. We will evaluate what we have so far,” he said.

Messina’s widow remained at the DIJ for 4 hours where she gave her sworn statement of the events and the threats received. Tomorrow she will file a criminal complaint. (TVN)

Pineda Will Fight Back To Avoid Being Removed From The PRD

Politics"We will fight back in this process. I’m truly surprised about this decision. I have always fought and we will fight here as well.”

This was the statement made by Raul Pineda when he found out that the secretary general and presidential candidate of the PRD, Juan Carlos Navarro, ordered his dismissal and banned him from running for deputy in the 2014 elections.

Pineda, who was blamed by his political rival Katy Ramos of murdering her husband, Juan Ramón Messina, who was killed at a restaurant in San Miguelito, said he will defend himself before the authorities of the PRD and the Electoral Tribunal.

"We were chosen as the favorite candidate for deputy and we will fight for this… I am really surprised.”

He said this removal process is based on “an accusation with no grounds.”

"The authorities have not even started the investigation and I'm already being judged… What happens if tomorrow the Prosecutor and the authorities catch the accomplices or the murderers of Juan Messina?” he asked rhetorically, and said he had no physical contact with Messina on Saturday.

After the expulsion process against Pineda was announced at 7:00 p.m., without allowing the journalists to ask any questions, Navarro said: “The way we are acting today, as leaders of this party, will be part of our permanent regulations in this party and in the next government.”

One of Pineda’s billboards in the Roosevelt was set on fire shortly after Messina’s murder. (Estrella)

Raul Pineda Breaks The Silence

PoliticsRaúl Pineda, one of the politicians who is currently in the eye of the storm, first due to a recording and then due to a statement made by the Public Security Minister, José Raúl Mulino and his fellow party member Juan Ramón Messina, finally broke the silence and gave an answer to all the strong accusations made against him, completely ignoring what Messina said, agreeing with Mulino on certain areas, and saying he recognizes the “human side” of President Ricardo Martinelli.

About the statement made by the Security minister, who said “the party knows what he is into and what I’m talking about,” in reference to Pineda, he said “he does not know what the Minister is talking about” but said he has spoken with him and they agree in 80% of the things they want for San Miguelito to be free of violence.

The deputy talked about his past, revealing he was addicted to drugs for 17 years, and thanks to a businessman, who gave him a job, an office and a computer “that I didn’t even know how to start” he started succeeding, “maybe this is why they related me to drug trafficking,” he said.

When he was asked about his position on the statement made by the lawyer Juan Ramón Messina, husband of the candidate running for deputy, Kathy Ramos, he only said “I have nothing to say about this man.” He said the same thing when he was questioned about his relationship with Ramos. Messina, told Telemetro that Pineda was “an informer of Martinelli and traitor of the PRD.”

The deputy from the PRD said he is friends with President Ricardo Martinelli, and said “he is an excellent human being, I must recognize he was good to my family,” said Pineda, revealing he has had relatives in the hospital, and even when his father died, the President gave him his support. “Not recognizing the human side of someone is rejecting yourself, I recognize how humanitarian he is, but he is my political rival,” said the deputy.

"He is the leader of the Democratic Change party, but I’m from the PRD where the leader is Juan Carlos Navarro" said Pineda, who also said he would not go to the CD, “I’m not CD and I don’t want to be CD, I’m PRD.”

After the 2014 elections, Pineda said he will not pursue another position in politics, he said e is preparing young people who deserve to be part of these positions.

He says he does not make a living out of politics but out of hard work, because he is a farmer, he grows coffee, and he has three college degrees. (Telemetro)

"Martinelli Is A Political Corpse And I Don't Respond To The Dead"

Politics

The presidential candidate of the PRD, Juan Carlos Navarro, said President Ricardo Martinelli is a political corpse and he doesn't respond to the dead.

His response came after Martinelli wrote on Twitter "more in 4 years than in 40. Yes, lazy bird, you're desperate and corrupt. Although it hurts, the people approves and supports this."

It all started last Sunday during a convention of the PRD when Navarro said they will not make an alliance with Cambio Democratico, he also stated "they have stolen more in four years rather than in 40."(TVN)

Cortizo Says Martinelli Did Not Meet His Promises

PoliticsThe former minister Laurentino Cortizo, during the first day of "Camino a la Victoria," before the members of the PRD, rhetorically asked how it was possible that Panama is the second richest country in Latin America but the second country with the worst distribution of income.

"When the PRD is in power the people are better,” was his slogan.

At the Conventions Center of the Megapolis Hotel, in front of the assistants, Cortizo said he is usually asked if Panama is a poor or rich country and he always says “it is an unfair country.”

He said president Martinelli promised to lower the price of food and he didn’t do so, he even quoted the president before the elections: “I do know how to lower the cost of food.”

In this sense, the member of the PRD said this government has increased the cost of food in a 25% during these 4 years, and the products at the Jumbo Stores are more expensive than in the supermarkets of the country.

"People are working to eat and we don’t have enough money in Panama, the Republic of millions of dollars.”

Cortizo said every 4 days a Panamanian dies from starvation and they are definitely going the wrong way if these government issues do not incentive the PRD members to win in the 2014 elections.

"The agricultural sector is going through its worst moment… this government has privileged importations in the detriment of the producers and all of us as consumers.”

The former minister, through a presentation, was showing issues within the government and the cost overruns such as the one at the Coastal Beltway, comparing the case to the previous government.

For example, he reported the expansion from San Miguelito to Tocumen, in which the center división was turned into a lane, because the kilometer of asphalt cost 20 million dollars. (Estrella)

"Surveys Will Continue Placing Arias As The Favorite Candidate"

PoliticsThe PRD is extremely concerned after the results from the latest survey because their presidential candidate, Juan Carlos Navarro, is no longer in the first place, according to the Presidency Minister Roberto Henríquez, who believes the leaders of the party should be the ones in charge of giving a statement about the matter.

Although Henríquez did not want to elaborate about Navarro’s debacle on his way to the Palace of the Herons, he said the polls will continue placing José Domingo Arias as the favorite candidate of the Panamanians. "We will not get into other parties’ issues. What I can say is all the survey data published in the country agrees that José Domingo Arias is way on top of the opposition candidate. If this is causing tension, problems and crisis within the party, they must clarify this situation,” said the Minister.

The crisis of one of the nation's largest groups intensified at the beginning of this week after old representatives of the party founded by Omar Torrijos requested their group to analyze the possibility of replacing Navarro as the presidential candidate due to the wide difference of preference for the President of the Democratic Change Party.

According to Article 33 of Decree No. 7 of March 13, 2013, the only way a candidate can be replaced after he or she is chosen through primary elections, they must resign from their candidacy. This person can be replaced after health issues or death. In this case, the Electoral Tribunal would organize new primary elections, and if there is not enough time to do such thing, the application of the new political figure would be done by the National Convention or the National Board of the party. Navarro's Candidacy Is In Crisis

PoliticsThe former secretary of the PRD, Mitchell Doens, said the attitude of the presidential candidate of his party, Juan Carlos Navarro, when he underestimated the meeting with the President, Ricardo Martinelli, is an “insult to the intelligence” of the group.

“This created great discomfort in the party, because the group knows we need a presidential candidate who is fighting against the government and its politics, and this is something Navarro doesn’t do…” he said. Doens said Navarro’s statement about the meeting with Martinelli on August 15 of it being a casual encounter is even worse to his campaign. (Prensa)

Anel "Bolo" Flores Is Thinking Of Leaving The PRD To Go Somewhere Else

Politics“In October I will let everyone know if I’m going to go to another party or not,” said the businessman and member of the PRD, Anel "Bolo" Flores.

"I have not taken this decision yet, which is why I’m going to take my time,” he said.

"We were the first ones in supporting Juan Carlos Navarro, but we have not seen a leader in him in the last few months. The people leading this new PRD as Navarro says is a group of businessmen asking for funds for the presidential campaign,” he said.

He said Navarro is becoming their opposition because he is always traveling or in Darien. “There is uneasiness within the party because there is no leadership,” said Flores.

We recommend Navarro to stop attacking his colleagues and to be the opposition of the government party, the CD, and not his own party.

Henriquez Said He Does Not Know Who Requested Information Through Facebook

PoliticsThe Presidency Minister, Roberto Henríquez, said he is unaware of who was requesting information from users in Facebook.

The official said the institution he leads has not requested such information, and asked for Facebook or the media to inform who did this and why.

Henríquez, who voted at the Belisario Porras School, also asked his fellow party members as well as any other politician using Twitter to take it down a notch, and set aside any insults or hate speeches so the 2014 elections can turn into a fair tournament.

In this sense, he denied there would be violent general elections as many are predicting.

“I did experience violent tournaments with deaths and injured people and I don’t believe we will have the same situation in 2014,” he said.

Last month it was known that 74 countries requested information from 38 thousand users in Facebook. Panama appears in this list and, allegedly, this request was made twice during the first semester of 2013. (Prensa)

Navarro Believes Food Will Always Be Expensive As Long As Martinelli Is In The Government

PoliticsThe presidential candidate and secretary general of the PRD, Juan Carlos Navarro, said he will lower the high cost of the basic basket of goods as a different proposal from the one issued by the government.

"Unfortunately with the current government we have seen life is now more expensive than it ever was, we’ve never paid so much for our food,” said Navarro to the journalists after a ceremony organized by his party at the administration building in the Panama Canal to celebrate the 36 years of the Torrijos-Carter treaty.

Navarro, clearly referring to President Martinelli, said: “this is definitely not going to change if the owner of a supermarket or his drunken friends are in the government.”

Meanwhile, Navarro also addressed the political attacks by saying the authorities should respect each other, always thinking about dialogue and their campaigns should be based on proposals.

"We don’t want more insults, no more humiliations… we don’t want more conflicts, we want peace, and to have our issues resolved.”

According to Navarro, this campaign should be based on proposals, not on insults or a dirty campaign.

"And this is why all Panamanians need politicians to respect the Electoral Ethic Pact, which I sincerely hope this is signed by all the parties, because as you may know the government party has not signed it yet, which is unfortunate.”

He said the government is still “on time” so sign this agreement, “we respectfully invite them to sign it so all Panamanians are benefited from this.” (Estrella)

Arias's Campaign Was Giving Away Tickets For The Game Panama Vs Jamaica With A Political Message

PoliticsThe Panamanian Soccer Federation (Fepafut) confirmed the presidential candidate from the CD, José Domingo Arias, purchased a package of tickets for the game on Friday between Panama and Jamaica, valid for the qualifying matches of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Fepafut announced this after a picture was uploaded to Twitter of two courtesy tickets for the game, with the inscription: “JOSÉ DOMINGO ARIAS – PRESIDENT.”

During their press conference, the Fepafut said they were not responsible for these tickets because the company Ticket Plus is actually in charge of doing this. “This is done by Ticket Plus. We want to clarify this transaction was paid for and it was not a gift.”

Also, they said they agreed on selling the tickets for the game on Friday because there was still space for more fans at the Rommel Fernández Stadium.

“The assistants of the candidate requested Ticket Plus to print a personalized message, according to what Fepafut managed to investigate. Our federation was never consulted about this,” said the statement published by the federation. (Prensa)

Gisela Chung Will Run For Deputy For The Panameñista Party

PoliticsOne of the founders of the Nationalist Republican Liberal Movement (Molirena), Gisela Chung, said she supports the presidential candidacy of Juan Carlos Varela and she will run for deputy in San Miguelito for the Panameñista Party.

Chung said she took this decision with a group of leaders, because the electoral process is just around the corner and the Molirena denied them the chance to join them.

Chung recognized her decision of supporting Varela’s candidacy and running for deputy in the Panameñista Party (the Molirena is allied to the Democratic Change) was the only way she could participate in any political decision.

"Since I agreed to run for deputy for the Panameñista Party, now I must separate from the Molirena and I am aware of my decision,” said Chung.

She said since the Molirena takes decisions at random, many people have had to look for opportunities somewhere else. (TVN)

New Ombudsman Will Respond To The Interests Of Martinelli And The CD

PoliticsThe appointment of Lilia Herrera Mow as the new Ombudsman has been strongly rejected due to her link with the government party, the Democratic Change (CD).

The general coordinator of the Front for Democracy, Mariano Mena, said the expectations on the election of this figure went down to the floor. This happens whenever “someone from the CD is chosen because besides responding to the interests of Ricardo Martinelli, they also do so with the CD.”

Mena said the simple fact Herrera is from the government party “ties both her hands and feet.” He predicted the Office of the Ombudsman will not do what this institution is supposed to.

“We will be in the same position we are with the Comptroller General or the Attorney General’s Office,” he said.

On the other hand, Angélica Maytín, executive president of the Foundation for the Development of Citizen Liberty, Panamanian chapter of International Transparency, said the “appointment of the new Ombudsman was better than the previous one [Patria Portugal] because at least Herrera is a lawyer and has an extended professional experience, including teaching.”

However, Maytín said “her Achilles’ heel is obviously her political link with the CD party.”

Meanwhile, Alfredo Berrocal, secretary of the National Federation of Public Officials, expressed his discomfort after Herrera was appointed. He said: “I don’t trust on the function that Lilia is going to undertake, because she was not transparently chosen and does not obey to what the citizens are demanding.”

He also said that unfortunately in Panama, public officials are not picked based on their personal achievements. The political character always prevails, according to Berrocal.

Herrera Mow was chosen yesterday, Wednesday September 4, as the new Ombudsman, among a list of 49 participants. She will replace Patria Portugal and will remain in this position until 2016. (Prensa)

The CD Will Determine If Enrolling A Pastor For Deputy In The Party Would Violate The Constitution

PoliticsEma Correa, spokeswoman of the Elections Committee of the PRD, said they were going to determine if the evangelical pastor’s candidacy would violate the Constitution.

Gerard Cumberbatch applied for this position on June 7 for the CD and started his candidacy on September 1 in San Miguelito. “We will assess this issue and will inform about the results,” she said.

Regarding the primary elections on Sunday, she said they have organized the primaries in almost every circuit in the country to choose their candidates.

She explained approximately 260 thousand citizens are enabled to choose the candidates for deputies and 380 thousand to assign the representatives, after the party decided to let their allied party vote for certain popular positions.

Correa said even though this caused certain discomfort within the members of the CD, they have overcome this because they understood the strategy of the party. (Panama America)
