Killed While Riding His Motorcycle Home From Work

Traffic AccidentsA father of three who worked as a supervisor for a private security company was killed on Via Tocumen in a traffic accident.

The victim, Thomas Gabriel Batista, 38, was a hard worker, quiet, who took his three children to school every day, said his sister Luzmila.

According to the information received by the family, at about 10:00 pm Batista spoke with his boss on the phone, said he had finished working for the day, and headed towards the company's base of operations to turn in his equipment.

Both Batista's supervisor and his family assume he was heading towards his home in Monte Rico in the district of 24 de Diciembre when the accident occurred.

Unfortunately he never reached home, where his wife and their children were waiting.

He left three children behind, aged 12, 8 and 2 years.

The Batista family have received two versions of the accident. In the first instance, that the motorcycle he was riding was hit from behind, and the other, that supposedly another vehicle knocked him out of the roadway.

One Killed, Seven Injured When Bus Carrying School Teachers Loses Brakes in Chiriqui

Traffic AccidentsThe six teachers who were injured on Sunday remain hospitalized, two in San Felix and four in the Regional hospital in David, but are in stable condition, according to the Regional Director of Education, Gertrudis Rodriguez.

In this accident which occurred at Quebrada Pita in the district of Muna, Ngäbe Buglé, died Lieutenant Jose Noel Gonzalez, a native of the province of Herrera.

Gonzalez was going to the community of Peña Blanca accompanying a teacher who was traveling with the other educators to begin the new school year on Monday, when the car in which they were riding lost its brakes, crashed into a ditch, and overturned, said Cesar Ramiro Fuentes, a resident of the sector.

There were a total of eight people in the car including six who were teachers.

Their names are Ofelia Acosta, Nidia Moran, Víctor Pinto, and Nery Batista, all from the school in Tébujo.

The others who were injured were Jorge Adames from the school at Llano Majagua, and Roosevelt Camaño from the school in El Vigui.

Those with the worst injuries, Jorge Adames and Nery Batista, were taken to the Rafael Hernández regional hospital in David.

The others who were injured received care at the hospital in San Felix, among them Francisco Perez, who is not an educator but who was also traveling in the car. (TVN)

Editor's Comment: There was some confusion in the earlier reports of this accident. Yesterday in a press conference the Education Minister Lucy Molinar said two teachers had been killed in this accident. Now as more accurate information is becoming available, it turns out that only one person was killed, and in fact he was not a teacher.

20 Injured When Two Buses Slam Into A Herd Of Cattle in Panama

Traffic AccidentsAn estimated 20 people were injured Monday morning when two small buses collided with escaped cattle, in Tortí, Darien Province.

The drivers of the two small buses were surprised when taking a curve, sand they suddenly saw the cattle on the road and could not avoid them.

The buses provide service from the Darien to Panama City. (TVN)

Editor's Comment: I came motoring around a curve on a motorcycle once and came upon a cow and her calf in the middle of the road. I had to lock the brakes up hard and slid to a stop a mere inches from the cow's nose. I mean, she could have licked the face plate on my helmet. While the incident scared the hell out of me and I was "having a cow," she barely flinched. All I got was sort of a "huh?" look out of her, and then they both eventually wandered off the road, nonchalant as hell. So add "cows on the damn road" to your list of things to look out for in Panama.

Two Killed, Three Injured In Early Morning Traffic Accident

Traffic Accidents Two people were killed and three injured in a spectacular car accident on the road that leads to El Copé of La Pintada, in the province of Coclé, when the driver of a pick-up truck lost control and crashed into a tree.

It was learned the five people left in the vehicle at 4:00 am, after attending a dance activity in the community of El Potrero.

Jose Hernandez, a 32 year old teacher, and Nedelsy Quijada, a 23 year old, died at the scene of the accident.

Also traveling with them were Kendra Lashmy, 17, Luis Tejada, 26, and Sarac Patel, 33, who were injured and were taken by ambulance to the emergency room of the Aquilino Tejeira hospital in Penonomé. Some of the family members of the victims arrived at the scene, who could not believe the tragedy that occurred a few days before Christmas and New Year.

They were taken by police officers to their patrol cars to calm them down, while the bodies of their relatives remained in the wrecked vehicle.

Juan Mora, a resident of the community of El Potrero, said it was regrettable that the vehicles on this road, which is paved, have a tendency to speed, causing accidents.

He added that when there are parties these unfortunate events occur, as happened a few years ago, when in the same way a young man died as a result of speeding.

He said that another cause of accidents on this road are the animals that run loose, and people who drink too much at parties.

The Transit Authority is investigating the causes of the accident. (Panama America)

Editor's Comment: Something you might not think about - one of the most dangerous times to drive in Panama is at dawn on a Saturday morning. People who have been out drinking all night see the sun come up and "it's time to go home." I've seen some drunk drivers do very dangerous stuff at that time. And, as I've said many times before, driving is probably the most dangerous thing you'll ever do in Panama. Be safe out there, especially now when there are a lot of Christmas parties going on.
