Car Explodes and Burns After Traffic Accident In Front of Metro Mall

Traffic AccidentsBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - At 3:30 am in the morning two cars were involved in a traffic accident in front of the Metro Mall on Via Tocumen. The occupants got out of their vehicles to check the damage when a third vehicle slammed into the rear car from behind, causing an explosion and fire. The fire department arrived on the scene to put out the fire, and the car involved was completely destroyed. Check out the video on Telemetro at this link. Consider buying a cheap reflective vest and a couple of traffic cones or those stand-up reflective triangles to keep in your trunk. If you find yourself stuck in the middle of the road for whatever reason, at least you could make yourself more visible to other drivers.

Abdiel Escudero, of the Fire Department of Pedro Miguel, said the strong current was taking the car, so they acted swiftly using a ladder, rope, and stretcher to remove the driver, who was taken by an ambulance from the 911 service to a local hospital. (Dia a Dia)

Editor's Comment: Yet another car crashes, the victim of hydroplaning on the road connecting Panama City to the Centennial Bridge. There is an accident on that road practically every time it rains. Go slowly there in the rain, slower than what you think might be safe. All of these drivers were surprised when they lost control of their vehicles. Don't be next.

Traffic AccidentsAn unidentified man was run over and killed on the highway from Arraiján to La Chorrera near the old toll booth, and less than 10 meters from a pedestrian bridge. The victim was hit by a car whose driver fled the scene. Just then a truck came along and ran over the victim again without seeing him in the road. The driver felt the sudden bump and when he stopped to see what he had hit, he saw the body and notified the police. Residents of the area say they do not know the person who was killed, but indicated that many residents passing through the area do not use the pedestrian bridge.

In another accident, there was a triple collision at about 1:00 pm yesterday afternoon near the 7 de Septiembre neighborhood. The injured were taken to the Social Security medical clinic in Arraiján. This accident caused a tremendous vehicular traffic jam.

In another incident, the road that leads to the waterfall in La Chorrera almost became the scene of a tragedy when a sedan with license plate number 316573 rolled into the water. It all happened when the woman who was driving the car apparently forgot to put on the emergency brake. The occupants of the vehicle could only watch as the car rolled into the water. Drunk Prosecutor Fired For Leaving Scene of Accident

Traffic AccidentsA circuit prosecutor was removed from office yesterday afternoon after he left the scene of an accident which he apparently caused, which left one person injured. The incident occurred yesterday morning, Thursday, at the intersection of Calle 67 and Vía España in the neighborhood of Carrasquilla, area of San Francisco, when 38 year old Mauricio Olmedo Cevallos Sanjur, who identified himself as Fourteenth Circuit Prosecutor of Panama, collided with a delivery truck in front of the Bimbo baking company. Sanjur Cevallos, allegedly lost control of the car he was driving, a brown BMW SUV with license plate number 982929, colliding with the truck that was parked near the entrance of the company. As a result of the impact, the truck driver was injured with blows to the body, and he was trapped between the entrance gate and the vehicle because at the moment the accident occurred he had gotten out of his vehicle and was opening the gate.

When the traffic police units arrived on the scene, the prosecutor gave them his driver's license and then left the scene of the accident, aboard another car, apparently to avoid taking a Breathalyzer test, because the police officers noticed the behavior of the prosecutor indicated he was under the influence of alcohol. Witnesses at the scene of the accident pointed out the broken neck of a bottle of alcohol that was found just below the prosecutor's car door, indicating the bottle fell to the ground at the time when he got out of his car. What's more, he also pulled out a handgun,

The truck driver was taken to a medical center for care, where he remains hospitalized. The general secretary of the Public Ministry, Nedelka Diaz, issued a statement yesterday afternoon saying that prosecutor Cevallos had been removed from his position for having left the scene of an accident, and as a member of the Public Ministry he should lead by example, adding that the law will be more rigid in the case of this case because it deals with a public official. His seat will be filled on an interim basis by Oderai Diaz, who has more than 20 years of experience. It was also reported that the family members of the accident victim have been approached in order to offer them any necessary assistance. Yesterday afternoon Mauricio Cevallos was taken to the office of the Assistant Attorney General to make his statement about the facts of this case. (El Siglo)

Editor's Comment: This guy should be made and example of. Drunk, waving a gun around, leaving the scene of the accident to avoid taking the Breathalyzer test - my only question is, why in the name of hell did the cops on the scene let him get away like that? Why didn't they pull out all of the stops and arrest his ass on the spot? I know the answer - fear. They were afraid they would "get in trouble" for busting a sitting prosecutor. In fact, they should have known already that they had the legal authority to put his ass face down in the dirt and slap the cuffs on him - just like they would have done if the shoe was on the other foot, and it was a drunken truck driver that slammed into the car of the prosecutor. This attitude of "rights and privilege" has to be erased. They say that all are equal under the law, but in practice that's complete and utter bullshit. In Panama, some pigs are more equal than others, and this case proves it.

Drunk Driver Rams Into President Martinelli's House

Traffic Accidents The driver of a car blew through a security checkpoint and crashed his vehicle into the residence of the President of the Republic of Panama Ricardo Martinelli. The event triggered the activation of security elements. According to preliminary reports, the driver was drunk. Damages were reported to a privately owned vehicle and the property of the President, located in the district of San Francisco in Panama City. (TVN Noticias)

Editor's Comment: If a guy rams through a presidential security checkpoint for any reason (drunk or not) the driver should have taken about 50 rounds of 9 mm from every Uzi in the neighborhood. But of course in Panama the security guards were half asleep and caught flat footed by the actions of the drunk. Razor sharp, tight as a drum. Does anyone wonder why they hired an Israeli company and former Mossad agents to protect Martinelli? Your average Panamanian security guard armed with a rusty .38 - Scotch tape wrapped around the pistol grip and all - doesn't serve to generate a whole lot of confidence in anyone. This incident simply highlights how hard it is to protect anything in this country. Generally speaking the quality of security personnel is way below standard.
