20 Injured When Two Buses Slam Into A Herd Of Cattle in Panama

Traffic AccidentsAn estimated 20 people were injured Monday morning when two small buses collided with escaped cattle, in Tortí, Darien Province.

The drivers of the two small buses were surprised when taking a curve, sand they suddenly saw the cattle on the road and could not avoid them.

The buses provide service from the Darien to Panama City. (TVN)

Editor's Comment: I came motoring around a curve on a motorcycle once and came upon a cow and her calf in the middle of the road. I had to lock the brakes up hard and slid to a stop a mere inches from the cow's nose. I mean, she could have licked the face plate on my helmet. While the incident scared the hell out of me and I was "having a cow," she barely flinched. All I got was sort of a "huh?" look out of her, and then they both eventually wandered off the road, nonchalant as hell. So add "cows on the damn road" to your list of things to look out for in Panama.

Two Killed, Three Injured In Early Morning Traffic Accident

Traffic Accidents Two people were killed and three injured in a spectacular car accident on the road that leads to El Copé of La Pintada, in the province of Coclé, when the driver of a pick-up truck lost control and crashed into a tree.

It was learned the five people left in the vehicle at 4:00 am, after attending a dance activity in the community of El Potrero.

Jose Hernandez, a 32 year old teacher, and Nedelsy Quijada, a 23 year old, died at the scene of the accident.

Also traveling with them were Kendra Lashmy, 17, Luis Tejada, 26, and Sarac Patel, 33, who were injured and were taken by ambulance to the emergency room of the Aquilino Tejeira hospital in Penonomé. Some of the family members of the victims arrived at the scene, who could not believe the tragedy that occurred a few days before Christmas and New Year.

They were taken by police officers to their patrol cars to calm them down, while the bodies of their relatives remained in the wrecked vehicle.

Juan Mora, a resident of the community of El Potrero, said it was regrettable that the vehicles on this road, which is paved, have a tendency to speed, causing accidents.

He added that when there are parties these unfortunate events occur, as happened a few years ago, when in the same way a young man died as a result of speeding.

He said that another cause of accidents on this road are the animals that run loose, and people who drink too much at parties.

The Transit Authority is investigating the causes of the accident. (Panama America)

Editor's Comment: Something you might not think about - one of the most dangerous times to drive in Panama is at dawn on a Saturday morning. People who have been out drinking all night see the sun come up and "it's time to go home." I've seen some drunk drivers do very dangerous stuff at that time. And, as I've said many times before, driving is probably the most dangerous thing you'll ever do in Panama. Be safe out there, especially now when there are a lot of Christmas parties going on.

Three Killed In Arraiján Traffic Accident

Traffic AccidentsThree people were killed and three injured was the result of a traffic accident in Arraiján. The incident occurred when the car fell into a ravine near the National Air Service in the rain. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital. (Dia a Dia)

Editor's Comment: Slightly different take on the same accident. It looks like maybe the driver of the car lost control in the rain and the car went into the ravine, which was swollen by the rainwater. The thing about the car being swept off of the road by the force of the water sounded sort of wrong, on the face of it. Maybe he hydroplaned?

Truck Loses Brakes On Hill, Rolls Backwards, Takes Out Three Vehicles (Caught On Dash Cam)

Traffic AccidentsBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - How many times have you heard me say it? When driving in Panama, it is highly recommended to have a dash cam video running at all times. You simply never know what's going to happen at the end of your front bumper. Matt, a long time Panama Guide reader, took that advice. Take a look at what happened to him today.

Editor's Comment: Thank God, he wasn't injured. The two people who bailed out of the truck were taken away in an ambulance. When you see it happen on the video, this accident was obviously caused by the truck on the hill that lost its brakes. But now change the scenario slightly. What if the truck just rolled backward and only hit the first vehicle, then stopped. What if there were no other witnesses? The truck driver could have easily claimed that he was hit from behind in traffic court, right? Having this video to play in court will make the decision easy for the judge, because he doesn't have to figure out who's lying to him. Buy a dash cam! Do it now. You won't regret it.

Compilation Of Accidents Caught On Dash Cam Video From Around The World

Traffic AccidentsBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - You guys already know I'm a big fan of having a dash cam (video) running in your car at all times. It gives you an additional layer of protection here in Panama because it eliminates the "my word against his" scenario - where the "gringo" is often assumed to be at fault.

Take a look at this compilation of traffic accidents caught on dash cams from around the world. When you're watching this video, ask yourself - "How many of these accidents would I have been able to avoid if I was the driver in the car with the camera?" If some other guy does something stupid, loses control, and crosses over into your lane, many times you go from zero to head-on in one second or less - with no time at all to react.

These videos will also reinforce the need to always have a small fire extinguisher in your vehicle with you. Watch to see how many vehicles burst into flames at the moment of impact. What would you be able to do if that was facing you on the other side of your windshield? Anyway, presented as a public service announcement, advocating for traffic safety, and the value of dash cams.
