Bill 437 Would Ban The Importation Of Used Tires To Panama

Traffic AccidentsAbout 70 thousand people could be affected if the provisions included in Bill 437 which dictate rules on the management of used tires pass the National Assembly. One of the articles in Bill 437 would prohibit the importation of used tires to Panama. Javier Henriquez, a spokesman for the Committee for the Defense of Tires of Little Use, said Bill 437 was returned to committee for consultations, but they fear their businesses would disappear if the bill is approved. (Telemetro)

Editor's Comment: Right now in Panama there are businesses who buy used tires in the United States, import them to Panama by the container load, and then resell them as cheap "little use" tires. Mostly due to insurance regulations and a fear of being sued, rental car companies in the United States frequently change the tires on their cars even though (to the Panamanian taxi driver's eye) there's "nothing wrong with them." If Bill 437 passes as written, this practice would come to an end. And of course it's difficult or impossible to quantify how many accidents occur in Panama every year, and how many people are killed, because of the tendency for Panamanians to drive tires until they literally explode on the rim. Ah, yeah, now it's time for a new (used) one. Damn, there goes $10 bucks...

Two Killed, Eleven Injured In Fatal Pacora Accident Last Sunday

Traffic AccidentsHis grandmother told his father not to take the boy to the river, but it went in one ear and out the other. On Sunday, the Nissan pickup truck in which five year old Johandre Guainora was traveling, accompanied by three adults and twelve friends, crashed into a telephone pole as they drove down the Vía de Los Lotes in Pacora. In the fatal accident in which Johandre died, according to his family, he never should have been in the car, because his maternal grandmother who was in charge of caring for him and raising him, had warned the boy's father that he was forbidden to take the child out, but he disobeyed. "It was stubbornness to make the trip to the river and to take him. It is true that the boy wanted to go, but my mom gave an order and dad had to accept it. Now we regret his loss," said Bitelda Ortega, aunt of the child.

Negligence? - But this fatal trip not only killed the child, but also that of Jose Martin Otero, the driver of the car and a beloved neighbor in the community, who along with his friend Benilde Guainora (Johandre's father) decided to organize the trip, and also invited several playmates for their children to enjoy and bathe. "He was a good person and loved by all, but he never should have driven that pickup in that condition," said a neighbor. Apparently Ramos was under the influence of alcohol when he took the wheel. "He's spent the evening drinking booze and had not slept enough. He woke up sprawled on the porch of the house with his buddy," said a local resident.

Despite Otero's alleged state of intoxication, they still took the trip. There were some 16 passengers between adults and children distributed in the car.

The Journey - According to a 12 year old boy, who traveled all the way in the back of the pickup, all morning went smoothly. The boy said they arrived at the river at 9:30 am in the morning. They swam and enjoyed the day, but as they drove back to their homes in Kuna Nega, Ancon, the worst happened. "We were driving very fast and as we entered a curve, I heard a noise, and the car flipped and turned three times. Later, we hit the telephone pole. I flew out of the car and hit my head and back. Because of the pain I could not see my friends," recalled the boy, who had bruises all over his body.

The same or worse was the experience for the cousin of the boy who died, who came to believe that he had died. "I had been asleep and only felt the blow. Then I saw my bloody head and fainted. I thought I was dead. Then I woke up," he said, very fearful.

At the hospital - Ten children were injured in the fatal accident. Two of them are still in the Children's Hospital where they are recovering from injuries. Meanwhile, Jacqueline Camargo, the wife of José Otero who died in the crash, is is pregnant, remains in critical condition at the Santo Tomas hospital. (Mi Diario)

Three Killed In Traffic Accident On Panamá-La Chorrera Highway This Morning

Traffic AccidentsThree men died and two remain in serious condition in the Nicolas Solano hospital, after their vehicle collided with the back of an 18 wheeler that was parked on the side of the Panamá-La Chorrera highway, near the old toll booth, at about 5:30 am this morning. Killed were José Batista, Alan Abraham Bejamín Acevedo and Luis C. Molina Degracia. The injured are Camilo Saucedo and Luis Carlos Molina, and they are in delicate condition. The two injured were transferred from the Nicolas Solano hospital in La Chorrera to the Santo Tomas hospital in Panama City. Early reports indicate that the driver of the sedan, who was offering "pirate" taxi services, lost control due to the presence of a bus that caused the collision with the 18 wheeler, which was parked. The driver of the sedan and the occupants were heading to the capital city. (Critica)

Editor's Comment: The driver of the car was almost certainly speeding. You can see the "40 kph" sign in the photo - that's 28.4 miles per hour. It's hard, if not impossible, to do that kind of damage at 28 miles per hour.
