Beer Truck Dumps Cases on Curve - Pan American Highway in Panama

Traffic AccidentsBy DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - On Thursday morning, 1 March 2012, I was driving up to the area of the Pacific beaches with Jeff Duda of Panama Teak Forestry, to attend the Playacommunity Mixer. As we were coming down the back side of the Cerro Campana hill on the Pan American highway, we came upon an accident that had just happened. A beer truck took the corner too fast and part of his load (cases of empty beer bottles) dumped into the roadway. When we got there the bottles were still rolling down the road, and the accident had just happened. So I whipped out my video camera and shot some quick video from the car (below). While I was shooting this I thought the cases were full of beer, but now that I'm looking at the video I can see that they were actually cases of empty bottles. Jeff just called me this morning. He's on his way to a meeting at Playa Blanca, and he said "you'll get a kick out of this. I came up on the spot where the guy dumped his cases of beer, and there's another truck that's gone off the road and into the ditch. It's lying on it's side, on top of the broken beer bottles." Go figure. You might want to be very, very careful on these curves - because even if you do nothing wrong, you might get a truck or a load or something else on your head. Pass with caution...

Meanwhile, the driver said when he stepped on the brake pedal it broke. The accident occurred at 7:15 am this morning. Traffic AccidentsThey left their homes to enjoy the summer on the beach at Isla Grande, Colon, but the trip turned into their worst nightmare. That was the sad fate of a group of people living in San Miguelito who departed very early yesterday morning to start their "tour", but they did not know of the tragedy that was awaiting them. It happened at about 3:00 pm near the boundary between the villages of Portobelo and Puerto Lindo. According to the narrative of some passengers, the driver of the "Red Devil" bus from the Tumba Muerto - Torrijos Carter route with license plate number 515428 was going at full speed, and people were yelling at him to slow down, but he did not.

"Suddenly, the bus lost control and went sideways ... Everyone here screamed, it was chaos. The worst part was taken by two young men who were crushed to death," said one of the occupants of the bus, who got the shock of his life.

The bus driver would not listen - After this, the people involved in the accident, according to witnesses and residents of the area, asked the bus driver for an explanation, and when he did not answer them, they tried to attack him. The bus driver, finding himself cornered, fled and went into the bush on the edge of the road. "So far, he has not shown his face and no one knows where he is," said a police officer.

Victims - There were about 60 people in the bus at the time of the accident, which ended up lying on its side and blocking the road. Heriberto Castro, 25, and Juan Carlos Batista, 23, were killed. The traffic accident caused a tremendous traffic jam on the roadway, and criminals took advantage of the situation to rob the occupants of vehicles who were in their cars waiting for the road to clear.

In another development, a driver left the roadway with his car and ran over six people who were watching the development of the Olympics in the neighborhood. Among those who were run over was the wife and two daughters of the representative of the village of Viento Frio, Ergentino Polo. As of yesterday afternoon, the injured were in stable condition.

Editor's Comment: Did you notice the part about how the criminals took advantage of the traffic jam to rob the occupants of the vehicles? Real nice bunch of pricks, eh? Two people killed in a bus accident, and all these people can think about is ripping off the stranded tourists. What do you think they would do if your car broke down on this roadway? Make sure your vehicles are in good repair if you go on road trips. If I was there, I would have had a couple of them tied across the hood of my car like deer...

Early reports indicate the car lost control when another shot across their pathway. Apparently the accident victims had just left a Christmas party. The three injured people were taken to the Susana Jones hospital for medical care. This accident was reported at 1 am. (Critica)

Editor's Comment: Man. One in the morning, just left a Christmas party, slammed into a utility pole and the police officer who was driving was killed. The way the original article was written it looks like the police officer was driving the car that was involved in the accident, and he was the one who was killed. The three passengers are called "acompañantes" in the original Spanish meaning they were accompanying him. Be very careful driving in the coming weeks as there are a lot of Christmas and New Years parties, so there will be more drunk drivers than normal on the streets. You can be stone cold sober but that won't help you if some other dude who's hammered runs into you.
