Making Software Tweaks and Improvements

What is PG? By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - This one goes into the "pardon our dust" category. Last week I noticed a problem with the software I use to display banner advertisements. One of the blocks was not displaying correctly and I spent about two days trying to trouble-shoot the problem using the existing software. When it became apparent I could not fix the problem using the old software, I decided to upgrade the program to the most recent release. Implementing the upgrade caused another trickle-down problem. I've been using this same program for about five years and it's been upgraded several times. But, the original database was created using the five-year-old version of the software. And, this new and most recent version was unable to use the old database. Anyway, no problem. I just decided to get a good copy of the new software running and then I would reload the banners. I didn't expect that to be much of a problem because there weren't that many running. And then my son got sick... Anyway, I am now getting the banners squared away again and once it's all done and finished then I'll be where I wanted to in the first place. It just took longer than expected. Whatever - I just keep kicking the can down the road, whistling a happy tune...

Feedback On The Steven Rich Story (Eric Jackson Branch)

What is PG? By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Received this morning via email: "Don: I regularly check your site and have found much that is helpful and interesting. But the childish rantings about Eric Jackson have no place on a mature and successful news site. You are simply giving him notoriety and free publicity. Ignoring him would certainly serve both you personally and Panama-Guide in the long run. I don't believe that 2% of your readers care about what Eric has to say or what your response is to his rantings. Keep the site growing and successful by sticking to what interests your readers - news about what is happening in Panama and forget about the playground-style shouting matches." I agree with your point of view, mostly. But you need to understand something fundamental - I've been having problems with Eric Jackson since 24 August 2004 (almost five solid years), since the day I launched this website. Eric Jackson is mentally ill, by his own admission, and he refuses to take the medications prescribed for his conditions because he says "I don't like the way they make me feel." In addition he is completely and totally obsessed with me. As part of his mental health issues he apparently has come kind of obsessive/compulsive disorder (I don't know, ask his shrink), but the end result is he constantly tries to find ways to do me harm through his website and writings. It was bad enough when his rants were limited to his own website, but now he has significantly "ratcheted up" the stakes by dragging me onto the front pages of a major newspaper in Panama. What I write about him here are not "childish rantings" but rather what I feel to be an important explanation, in this most recent situation with Steven Rich (a.k.a. "William Smartlee," "Ruth Osborn," and others), about how a single person with a grudge seeking revenge was able to successfully exploit Jackson's weaknesses, and through that manilpulation and the help of David Young, the Editor of the English language section of the "Estrella" newspaper in Panama City, publish my name as associated with the porn industry in Panama, and (obliquely) child pornography. With regards to your concerns over my ability to keep my website growing, I've been doing that successfully for almost five years (with Jackson on my back the entire time) but in any case I hear you and understand your concerns. Now, put yourself in my shoes for a minute - how would you feel if you had a mentally ill person with a widely read website routinely publishing things about you that were not true, or who regularly made every possible effort to harm your good name? What if your name appeared in a major Panamanian newspaper as being involved or associated with the porn industry in Panama, as part of a intelligently designed effort to simultaneously make references and indirect allegations of ties to child pornography. If it was happening to you, I bet you would be taking whatever actions within your power as well. Anyway, thanks for the input but I'm a weathered veteran when it comes to dealing with Eric Jackson. He is slowly but surely losing any remaining or residual credibility as a "journalist", exactly because of events like this one. With regards to giving him "notoriety and free publicity," I don't think so. Rather, I am slowly and methodically exposing him for what he is - showing his true colors. And, since taking him to court is both expensive and time consuming I've learned over the years it's much more effective to just methodically answer his rants even if they are somewhat boring to the majority of my readership. Hey, here's an idea - when you see "Jackson" in the headline or in the introduction, why not just skip to the next article. Since you already know the deal you're not my target audience, anyway. See, I can give advice as well... (grin)

Subscribe To Our Premium Content Section

What is PG? By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Introducing our new Premium Content program. We will be researching, writing, and publishing a series of exceptionally well documented articles in our Premium Content section. Access to these articles will be restricted to only those who have paid the $19.95 annual subscription fee. We just recently launched this concept and at the moment there are only a handful of articles in the Premium Content section. We will be producing new material at the rate of about one article per week (more or less). Eventually this database will grow into an exceptionally valuable "baseline" of knowledge for those living, working, and investing in the Republic of Panama. Our "stand alone" strategy is simple. We intent to make each and every article - by itself - worth more than the cost of the annual subscription. All of these articles are focused on ways to save money, earn money through investments, or to protect yourself from significant potential losses (physical, economic, or other.) So it's save, earn, or preserve. Right now (as of 12 June 2009) the following articles are in the Premium Content database:
  • Buying ROP Property In Panama For Fun And Profit - A "How To" Manual - Dealing with Rights of Possession (ROP) property in Panama can be notoriously tricky. We break it down for you and provide a step-by-step "how to" guide that explains how to safely buy Rights of Possession property in Panama and to take it through the complicated administrative process to obtain full and normal title. Once your formerly ROP property is turned into titled property, the value can increase substancially, as much as three times or more. This article includes tricks and tips from experts who have already been through the process, dozens of times. Note: This article only covers inland property and not beach front or island. Those kinds of ROP property will be covered under a separate stand-alone article soon. (Published on 6 June 2009)

Only Paid Subscribers Can Access: If you are not a paid subscriber and you click on that link (go ahead, try it) you should get bounced back to the "front door" (index) of the website. That's why the "bouncer" is the iconic symbol for the Premium Content program.

Having Access Problems? If you are a paid subscriber and you click on that link then you should immediately be taken to the article. If that doesn't happen then there's a problem, and you should let me know immediately so we can work together to figure out what's wrong. So far the biggest problems have been with logging in, and cache. You have to first log into the website using your user ID and password for the account that's been given access. The second problem is that some users have their cache set on their web browsers to not check for new changes every time. To see if that's your problem, log in, hit the link, and if you don't get the article hit refresh. Most of the time, these two steps have been clearing up most access problems.

Current, Valid, and Updated: One of the key features of our Premium Content section is that we will maintain these articles to keep them fresh and current, despite changing adminstrations, local laws, and regulations.

Want To Subscribe? There are only a couple of steps required and it's not hard. First of - send me $19.95 to pay for the annual subscription. Right now the primary means of making payment is via PayPal. I know, some of you absolutely hate PayPal and if that's the case then we can work something else out on a case-by-case basis. Then, once you've made payment, you will need a user ID and password to log onto the website. You have to be logged on in order to see the articles in the Premium Content section. Once you have your account information, send that to me in a separate email and I will activate your account and give you access. If you have any problems just shoot me an email and I'll help you figure it out. To sign up click on the PayPal button below:

Opening Up A New "Premium Content" Section for Paying Members

What is PG? By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - That's it, I'm going commercial on ya'. Starting today I am opening up a new "Premium Content" section of the website with articles and material that can only be accessed by paying members. The cost is only $19.95 per year (cheap). This new section will be populated with high-quality content written specifically with our paying members in mind. New material will be posted regularly, and articles will be focus-piece specific and much more in-depth than the standard news articles. Not to worry, if you don't want to hand me any of your cold, hard cash you will still be able to read all of the normal stuff, news and comments you've grown accustomed to. How To Pay: The easiest way to pay right now is to send $19.95 via PayPal to don@panama-guide.com and I'll be offering up more and better solutions in the future but for right now PayPal will work. If you want to do a local ACH here in Panama send me an email and I'll send you instructions. You will need a login and password to enter the Panama-Guide site as a normal user, and then after you've paid send me a separate email to let me know you've signed up and I'll manually add you to the "Premium Content" group to give you access to the new material. A word of warning - there's nothing in there yet but here's your chance to "flip a nickel to Don" for all the hard work I've done over the past five years. The plan is to use the new capital to actually hire some staff and grow this sucker into something even better than it is. Anyway, that's the plan. I'm sure you'll find it to be the best $20 bucks you ever spent (well, except maybe for that time in the Philippines...)

Panama-Guide.com Readership Grew 60% In Past Year

What is PG?

By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Now that the month of May 2009 is officially over and the final numbers are in, I went back to look at the percentage growth over the past year. Using the "Gold Chart" created by stats from Sitemeter.com, we saw a 60% increase in readership from 1 June 2008 to 31 May 2009. In June 2008 we had 61,163 Unique Visitors and in May 2009 we had a total of 98,272 or an increase of 60% on the year. And hey, I have to toot my own horn because, well, who else is going to do it. And to our dedicated followers and readers, thanks for making us #1.

End Of May Traffic Report and Highlights Recap

What is PG? By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - May 2009 was an exceptionally good month for traffic to the website, for several reasons. Most importantly the general national elections on 3 May 2009 caused a spike in interest with the election of Ricardo Martinelli - I saw a bit of a surge in traffic but nothing really spectacular. Also in May 2009 Panama became one of the Latin American countries with patients infected with the H1N1 influenza virus, so people were tuning in to read about that. There were other, somewhat goofy elements of interest that helped the traffic stats this month, to see what I mean go to Google and search for "Panama Women's Cricket Team" - more than 13,000 butt-lovers have come to see that article from around the world. Anyway, what matters is that we simply smashed all existing records for traffic to the website in every single category this month, which is great news for our sponsors and advertisers. As long we see slow, steady, and sustainable growth over time then I'm happy. We have some good months and some bad months, and May 2009 kicked butt... (more)
