Once Again - If your comment contains a URL, it won't see the light of day...

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I just deleted another comment submission because it contained a URL. If you want to post a comment on the articles published on this website, go for it. However - if you include a URL (a link to another website, article, blog, or what have you) I will instantly delete it and move on. Period. I read all of the comments before they go up, and if I run into a URL I just stop, back out, and hit "delete." I've already posted this policy several times, but I guess people still don't get it...

If You Put A URL In A Comment - It Gets Deleted

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Just a gentle friendly reminder. I do not allow links or URLs in the comments that readers submit to articles. I don't have the time to check them all out to make sure they don't take people to a bad place on the Internet, so just as a standard policy, if I see a URL (any URL) in a comment, the entire comment automatically gets deleted. I also don't have the time to edit or alter the comments to remove the URLs, so I just trash the whole thing. Anyway, please don't put links in comments. Thanks.

"Captcha" Plugin Fixed, Updated...

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Last night and this morning I received a couple of emails from people who had tried to create new user ID's on the Panama Guide system, but they couldn't do it because the "Captcha" plugin was not properly configured. This is the program that generates an image with a string of letters and numbers that you have to enter when registering for a user account. These days it's necessary to run this kind of program on a website like mine, to prevent machine generated email addresses from running scripts to register hundreds of automated accounts, in order to post spam in the comments, on the calendar, etc. They can't get away with it on my site anyway, because I personally review and approve every post manually before they go up. But no matter - the point is that the "Captcha" plugin is now working again, with the newest and most recent version of the program installed and updated. And once again, my apologies for any inconvenience that might have been caused, and thanks for your continued patience as I keep working to make this website a little better, each and every day.

Never Mind - The "Forum" Section is gone...

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - When I installed the updated "Forum" plugin again, it promptly screwed up the formatting and layout files for the entire website. So guess what - no one is really using it anyway, so it's gone. I'm ripping it out by the roots right now. The last thing I need are any more supposed "improvements" that make my life more difficult and complicated which screw up the overall website. So, file this one into the "never mind" category...

Ahhh, That's Better

What is PG? By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I'm about 99.5% done with the fix/upgrade work on the website. There are a few more things that I have to get done, mostly with updating and reinstalling all of the "plugin" files and programs to make sure that they are functioning correctly and compatible with the new CMS. Anyway, I'll be working on that with a few hours here and there during the rest of the week. It took two days, but for the most part I'm now back to whatever can be considered "normal" around here. And as usual, the rumors of my demise were premature (wishful thinking in some parts.) Therefore, I'm baaaaaaccccckkkkk....

Testing, Testing (Still Troubleshooting Details)

What is PG? By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - In case you're wondering, I'm still picking away at fixing all of the little formatting errors, details, and other elements and problems that arose as part of the recently performed upgrade of the underlying Content Management System (CMS) software that runs this website. You might have noticed that most things are back to "normal" - pretty much as they were before - however there are still some little technical and behind the scenes things that I'm working on. So, I'm still not back to 100%. Slowly but surely, Shirley. Anyway, now I need a "test image" to work out some directory issues. Let's see, what could I use for that ...

Getting There, Slowly But Surely...

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I spent the entire day working on the technical side of the website and have found and resolved some of the more important issues and problems that were causing the site not to resolve properly on Chrome, Firefox, and other browsers. While I was at it I also did a major upgrade of the underlying core Content Management System software that runs this website. Everytime I have to do this it's always a major pain in the ass becuase there are a thousand and one little files that if they're not put back in just the right place, then this or that does not resolve properly (as you can probably see...) Anyway, it's late, I'm tired, and that's enough for today. I'll get cracking at it again first thing in the morning to finish off the details. The most important thing is that the site is back up and functioning (more or less), you can read articles and the like. Now, I just have to finish off the details. Hey - look at the bright side - every time I have to dig into the guts of the website I learn something new. Yeah, it's a pain, but I prefer to make lemonaide, ya' know...

Troubleshooting Technical Problems on the Website

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Just a quick heads up. On Thursday, 20 January 2011, I worked into the afternoon in the office, publishing articles as normal, and then later that afternoon I took off for Playa Blanca to spend a long weekend at the beach with my wife and daughter. A friend had loaned us the use of his apartment in the Founder's 1 building, and the apartment was outfitted with wireless Internet access, so I hauled my "mobile office" with me (laptop, wireless keyboard and mouse, digital camera, video camera, USB expansion ports, etc.) My plan was to relax at the beach for awhile, and once the swimming, sand, sun, and fresh air had worn my daughter out, to get some work done on the website.

Well, it turned out that the wind had blown down a wall decoration and smacked the wall plug in the apartment and damaged the RJ-45 jack. To make a long story short - the Internet in the apartment didn't work. Then on Friday afternoon I started getting phone calls and email from Panama-Guide users reporting "Internal Server Error" messages when trying to access the website. Something happened to the server on Friday, and as of right now (Monday morning) the technicians at my hosting service are still trying to fix the problem.

Anyway, thanks for your concern. My apologies for any inconveniences caused. Hopefully by later today the problems with the website will be fixed, and everything will get back to "normal." And, it looks like I'll be doing an upgrade to the basic underlying software that runs the website this afternoon as well, so there might be some ups and downs while I tweak the switches. Anyway, I should have it all worked out by the end of the day today. That's the plan, anyway - let's see how it goes.

Don't Put Links in Comments for Articles

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - I like it when people comment on the articles published on this website, and I review and approve each one before it goes up. However I have a standing policy that no comments can contain links out to other websites, for a very simple reason. I don't have the time to check and verify each link before putting it out there, and I'm not going to take a chance that some knucklehead might want to put a link to a site containing a virus or whatever - either knowingly or unknowingly. Anyway, if I see a link in your comment I will simply delete it. FYI.

I Rarely Accept Anonymous Story Submissions

What is PG?By DON WINNER for Panama-Guide.com - Someone submitted an article for publication, complaining about a supposed wave of home invasion robberies in the Coronado area. If you want to submit an article for publication, you first have to create a user name and account on the website, sign in, and then hit "contribute." I very rarely accept contributions for publication from "anonymous." If you create an account and log in, then at the very least your account is associated with an email address. Those are minimum standards. If you don't do that, I won't publish your submission. Thanks for understanding.
